JERUSALEM: Pakistani singers Nauman Lasharie and Shumaila Husain are currently visiting Israel at the invitation of the American Jewish Congress. They will be here for a week to tour and perform, Israeli media reported on Friday.
Lasharie and Shumaila, who perform a fusion of jazz and traditional Pakistani music, arrived here a couple of days earlier and are visiting after a successful trip of a delegation of Pakistani-Americans 2 weeks ago.
“This visit will allow them to understand Israel,” media quoted Danny Grossman, the Israel director of the American Jewish Congress, as saying. “They will get to see some of the county, meet some of the people and be ambassadors of goodwill.”
In addition to their tour of the city, they gave an evening performance on Wednesday at the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance. They will also appear on a radio show and at the University of Haifa on Saturday (today) and will perform a final show at the Tel Aviv Centre for the Performing Arts.
Well I think it is high time since diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Israel were re-examined. Israel does have 'workable' relations with a couple of Muslim nations and I think Pakistan would do well to create diplomatic relations here - especially considering the Indian ties here. No place for emotions here but strategy is important.
As for the singers - what language will they be singing in? :)
Having diplomatic relations is a good thing. You dont have to LOVE them. It is all about who has the best relations on a diplomatic level. The US is now also re-examining it's diplomatic ties with India which historically have not been as strong as with Pakistan. But it makes sense for the US to re-examine their relations with India in the interests of their economy. This is exactly what needs to be done with relations between Pakistan and Israel. *Pakistan does not have any direct problems with Israel as far as I know - not like with India at least and there are diplomatic relation + more with India now - so why not Israel? *
same arguments that u put forward for relations with Israel apply to our relations to India and make sense because of our shared border, people and history etc
People did not want Afghanistan to be bombed, it happened with the support of our government;
now people do not want relationship with Israel; because they do not want to give a false signal to Israel that Pakistan is ok with its treatment of Palestine Issue!
cuz its not OK!
our realationship with America against the wishes of the people should be enough to benefit us really;
not another such relationship!?!?

Hum Hain, I do understand your sentiments but if you look at the rocky relations that Pakistan has sometimes had with the US where US has withheld delivery of paid for fighter planes unless Pakistan adheres to certain REQUIREMENTS, amongst other pressures which include bombing Afghanistan would you not agree then that having another 'card' on side is important?
ur thinking like Musharraf in the interests of Pakistan;
& i love Pakistan
even if u think without sentiments; Israel is not another card; its the same card as America;
u really believe its gonna go against America and help Pakistan!?
even if it was another card; without the resolution of Palestine Issue; its a No No!

Well Israel has had better relations with India than US ever has. Israel didn't listen to the US then. As part of the diplomatic relations Pakistan can try and hold talks about the Palestine issue - it can be a point of discussion because so far no one is talking and no one is listening. Innocent people are just dying as in Kashmir but Pakistan is talking to India. I too love Pakistan as I am half Pakistani. I also want the Palestinians to have their own land but tit for tat violence has taken so many lives over so many years - there has to be another way. Israel will continu to dominate the struggle coz of it's military might.
Pakistan's clandestine relationship with Israel was based on the shared belief that neither country poses a threat to the other. During 1971 war, American President is said to have offered Yahya Khan military help through Israel. Perhaps the relationship was necessitaed partly by Pakistan's desire to assure Israel that their nuclear program was not to produce an 'Islamic bomb', and on Israel's part, by a desire to forge alliance with an important Islamic country. Ironically, Israel's relations with India also seemed to have brought Pakistan closer to it. Pakistan did not want Israel, recipient of the latest US technology, to help India militarily in a way that undermined the strategic objectives of Pakistan.
The meeting between Pakistan's foreign minister and Israeli foreign minister in Turkey gave a public face to this relationship. It was the first formal meeting between the leaders of the two countries.
I think formal recognition would coincide with the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

I think so too - let's see what happens. Very good post!
