1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

Cricinfo:

You would have to think the match would probably not have gone into a fourth day had the follow-on been enforced. Pakistan ended day two with five men down; they end day three with three men down*The narrative of this Test has been decided by the umpiring errors which now stand at at least 12.* But again, what is disappointing is the absolute lack of fight Pakistan batsmen have showed. Their bowlers were sharp in the second innings, especially Junaid Khan, which can perhaps be one positive for the visitors.

Thank God I did not waste my time watching this match (somehow always knew we would struggle) but after reading some of the comments it seems that Pakistan were hard done by several umpiring errors

True the current Pak team lacks test class players (barring Younis and Ajmal, Misbah did not play. Azhar is still new and learning his trade) but it is good to see Whatmore making his feelings clear about the pathetic umpiring in this match and not just putting it all on the players (which I’m sure he would deal with in privacy)
Umpiring in this test has gone beyond a joke! Hope ICC do something in regards to this! The so called elite panel is comprised of some joke umpires

Good to see this no-nonsense attitude from Whatmore. **
Fuming Pakistan coach slams Decision Review System absence**

Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore on Sunday slammed the absence of the Decision Review System (DRS) in the series against Sri Lanka after his team suffered several umpiring errors in the first Test.

**The Test has been marred by at least 10 contentious decisions over three days by umpires Steve Davis of Australia and Ian Gould of England, with six of them going against the tourists.

**But the DRS, which allows players to appeal for reviews by the television umpire, is not being used in this series reportedly due to cost factors.

Whatmore, a former Sri Lankan coach, said he was surprised the DRS was not available for the series when it was used for Sri Lanka’s two home Tests against England in March and April.

“They had it for England, so why not here?” Whatmore, who guided Sri Lanka to the World Cup title in 1996, asked reporters after the third day’s play.

"It does not seem right to me that you have it for one series and not for another.

**“The DRS should be made compulsory for every series. That will go a long way in helping a lot of things – anything that will help make correct decisions.”

**Asked if Pakistan will make an official complaint about the two on-field umpires, Whatmore said he would not make a public comment on it.

“Whatever I need to say will be done through official channels,” he said.

**“There will be a fair bit to say, but I can’t make any public comment. We will do it the right way. We have ways of communicating with those who matter.”

**Whatmore said he was trying his best to boost the morale of his players amid the umpiring controversy.

“We just make it known to the players that it is out of our control and they need to do what they have to do,” he said. “We just try to make the most of it.”

Pakistan were facing certain defeat in the first match of the three-Test series after being reduced to 36-3 in their second innings while chasing a victory target of 510.

The International Cricket Council, which had earlier said the DRS was mandatory for all series, changed its stance last year and made it optional following objections from India.

Batting problems apart Pakistan lack a world class pacer at the moment (need atleast two good fast bowlers in tests)

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

I dont think DRS is the real problem.
For decades we have been playing without DRS but yes misjudgements happen sometimes (mostly in runouts and LBWs) on umpires parts. but this series is different, i have never seen so many bad decisions in such a short span of time.
even without DRS umpires are able to make good decisions with the help of third empire. it almost seems like umpires are working against pakistan on purpose.

** 257/7** with 2.4 overs remaining in the day. :hoonh: But with our main batsmen gone, this match is good as too.

Who is batting?

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

If only our batsmen had showed such application in the first innings and if Misbah was playing and if the umpires had not taken leave of their senses, the result might have been different. Having said that our batting line up sucks.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

Knowing SL, they will play for draws in rest of the matches. Who are the umpires for the next game?

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

ahh i forgot that.. by the way i luv the nickname of our new PM..Rental Raja..lol

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

its a clear sign that pakistan really needs to put in and work with new talent. We are not just weak in the batting department. Our bowling lacks depth as well. I mean you can't just rely on saeed ajmal and rehman on every match to bowl out all the batsmen. Fast quality pace bowling is definitely missing.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

That is true. Our batsmen continued to show that we really need to work on them as well as get decent pace attack. No Sami, no Umar Gul, no 'new bowler' of 30+ age.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

Sami has shown that pace does matter. If he had any control over his line and length he could have been a good bowler. What Pakistan needs is a decent pacer. Gul and Junaid just aren't good enough.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka v Pakistan at Galle, Jun 22-26, 2012

That has been his problem all this time.
