1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

Huge Disappointment. The following were talking points for quite sometime:

  1. Mansoor Akhtar is useless
  2. Imran Khan was not out.
  3. Salim Jaffar is the worst bowler in the whole world. (If you think about it now, it wasnt really that big a deal that a bowler got hit for 18 runs in the last over of an innings)
  4. Only if Salim Yousaf had been fit
  5. Why was Mudassar Nazar not playing the match.
  6. Were all the bowlers except for Qadir and Imran drinking the previous night, and were tired the day of the match?

Nearly all of these were just comments, which had no bearing on anything. Over a period of time, one has come to realize that such musings are part of any Pakistan defeat in a World Cup. However, this World Cup Semi Final was a huge disappointment because Pakistan was playing in a Semi Final for the first time at home ground and were expected to easily wipe away the second place team from the other group (the now unbeatable, Autralia).

I remember that Zia ul Haq has to request Imran to keep on playing cricket for the nation. Imran accepted the request, and managed to lead the team to victory in the next edition.

I remember it to be a reasonably big event that Imran had accepted the Zia ul Haq request to start playing cricket again. Dont know if it was the talk of the town. Somehow people were expecting Imran to come back and resume playing.

Dean Jones was runout by a mile...and the usual culprit David Shephartt ruled him not out...

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

One day later:

  1. Wish Vengsarkar was not injured.
  2. Wish Kapil didnot have itch to hit Hemming again for a SIX
  3. Azhar was no way LBW. Those umpires.
  4. Wish Kapil was not moron and plugged Gooch's sweeps.

Well... Story is same. Just different team and different day.

Yeah remember that game very well. That was perhaps the best outfit ever to represent Pakistan in a world cup with Immi, Miandad, Akram, Malik and Qadir all in their prime. Javed Miandad and Imran Khan took the fight to the Australians with a brave partnership of 112 after Pakistan slumped (and not for the first time) to 38-3. Then Imran was wrongly given out caught behind by Dickie Bird and although there was still hope while Miandad was at the crease that quickly disappeared when he was bowled by Reid for 70.

Interestingly the same two stalwarts were again involved in a similar ‘rescue’ act five years later in the 1992 WC Final and it was their 139-run 3rd- wicket partnership from a precarious position of 25-2 that laid the platform for onslaught by Akram and Inzi in the last five overs or so.

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

salay Mcdermott ko hawa banaya hoa tha Pakistan nay:grumpy:

Akram was out early after hitting 2 sixes of Border and Mcdermott. Khan Sahib got a wrong decision. Qadir and Yousuf tried but couldn’t repeat their heroics of Windies match at the same venue.

apni bad luck hee kharab thee us din:(

says it all...:D

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

I remember this game too, this game hurt because the team was in great form, and 1987 cup was the one Pakistan team deserved to win.

it should have been India Pakistan in the final with Imran & sunils last games, but that not how it turned out.

My memory is of the whole stadium singing "kabhi alwida na kehna" when Immi was bowling as he had announced that it would be his last game in Lahore since he was retiring after the cup.

worse than the 96 defeat :(

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

Unlike today, when the Pakistani cricketers are blammed for having taken some bribe to fix the match beforehand, in 1987, the common perception regarding the loss was that the umpire had actually been bought out by the opposing team, hence giving a bad decision for Imran Khan. Umpire Shepherd however, got immediate recognition in Pakistan, albiet not in the best of circumstances.

I remember that match very well .So much noise in the stadium .Especially ''ladies wing'' had a huge placard like ''We want Imran''.:D it was expected to be Ind vs Pak at Eaden Gardens.every thing went opposite .Poor Salim Jaffer he never played cricket after that .

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

Saleem Jaffar played Test Cricket untill 1992. His last test was against Sri Lanka in 1992.
He played ODIs untill 1990. Last one against WI in 1990.

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

Really... ?
not everyone...
did you look outside your mohallah? :D

Some had 1st year intermediate exams to prepare so not a lot of thought went into Pakistan losing the Semi. It was depressing though for sure.

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

i remember that game very well. cried for the whole day ad night and couldnt even eat cuz i was feeling sick. It was very disappointing for every pakistani. Next day after India lost to england, I felt a lot better and finally stopped crying :-) . my dad bought me Broast Chicken from Albaik reastuarant ( in jeddah) and it tasted so good.

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

I can understand your feelings

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

It happened because of GHAROOR of our players, alongwith some meherbaani showered by English Umpires ofcourse.

Remember the game against WI, the kaloos were in big trouble and Viv Richards was crying when got out and Miandad was laughing with others making fun of the situation.

Re: 1987- [Bhooli Bhisri Yaadain] Pakistan v Australia, WC Semi Final

Smoothie, you are actually mixing it up with the penultimate pool match with Srilanka. Srilanka while chasing were in trouble with Qadir making their lives miserable. When he caught and bowled Ranatunga, he started laughing while lying on the ground. Others also joined .

Later the media started lambasting Pakistan team when Pakistan lost their last pool match against Windies. Prior to that Pakistan had a 100% record in the 5 pool games. Media said that Pakistan team/players ko ghroor aagya hay, they were making fun of poor Srilankan players and this could result in their downfall. I still remember Abdul Qadir's reply: "Yeah Gharoor nahin hay bulkay mein tu khush ho rha tha kay Allah nay mujh say aam (ordinary) say bowler ko itney izat dee kay baray baray batsmen mujhay khail nahin patay".

Pakistan lost the semi-final against Australia and the whole nation went into mourning. However Pakistan after losing 2 WC games continued their losing streak and lost the home ODI series against England 0-3 and then an away ODI series with Windies 0-5.

Time and again Pakistan was reminded by the media of their Gharoor during the world cup game against Srilankans. Pakistan lost 10 consecutive ODIs after that win against Srilankans. It took them 1 year to register their first ODI win against the new World champs, Australia. Even that match became comical in the end. Anyone remember why that gane became comical :) Lets see how many here remember that game and the significance of the last moments of that game.
