A United States service member walked out of a military base in a rural district of southern Afghanistan on Sunday and opened fire on three nearby houses, killing at least 16 civilians, including several children, local villagers and provincial officials said.
The shooting risks further inciting anti-American sentiment in Afghanistan and troubling a relationship that had already been brought to a new low by the burning of Korans at an American military base last month. The American Embassy in Afghanistan quickly issued a statement on Sunday urging calm.The NATO-led coalition said in a statement on Sunday that a United States service member had been detained after an incident in Kandahar Province, in the south of the country, and that a number of civilians had been killed.

With due due due respect, how many times have we (Afghanis and Pakistanis) tried our own terrorists, who have killed and maimed thousands and thousands of people? Our own people killing our own? All we have are statements of condemnation from politicians, a sigh from the general public, and life goes on. I have yet to see a single terrorist act in Pakistan (and for sure, in Afghanistan) accounted for. Yet when an american soldier does it, we are so so bothered?

Taliban vow revenge for US soldiers rampage
KABUL: Afghanistan’s Taliban insurgents on Monday vowed revenge against “sick minded American savages” for the weekend rampag by a US soldier who killed 16 villagers in their homes.
The Taliban would “take revenge from the invaders and the savage murderers for every single martyr”, the Islamists said in a statement on their website.
The US soldier walked off his base and broke into the homes of villagers in Kandahar province’s Panjwayi district before dawn Sunday, killing 16 people including women and children.
A soldier has been detained and the United States has offered condolences to the families and pledged that action will be taken against anyone found guilty of the massacre. Kandahar is considered the birthplace of the Taliban.
“A large number from amongst the victims are innocent children, women and the elderly, martyred by the American barbarians who mercilessly robbed them of their precious lives and drenched their hands with their innocent blood,” the Taliban said.
"The American ‘terrorists’ want to come up with an excuse for the perpetrator of this inhumane crime by claiming that this immoral culprit was mentally ill.
“If the perpetrators of this massacre were in fact mentally ill then this testifies to yet another moral transgression by the American military because they are arming lunatics in Afghanistan who turn their weapons against the defenceless Afghans without giving a second thought.” (AFP)

The Soldier sure knew how to pick the targets. He killed the family and kids of a Tribal Elder in Pawjal district. He single-handedly set back the entire good will established by 10 years. Good bye Kandahar. More support to the Taliban based on this.

I was reading a tweet by BBC's reporter in Afghanistan who heard a person saying that the Americans dont need taleban's support to lose the war there. Every such incident will further erode the American effort of winning the hearts and minds of people.

So saddened by this. They say this man was having a 'breakdown'....... so this justifies killing numerous women and kids? Sicko! Even the people posting comments on news sites are making excuses for this evil man. And then they wonder why people hate them when they urinate on peoples holy books and rape kids etc... too. Even their generals and spokes people were smirking throughout the apologies and of course they knew what this man was going to do, they actively encourage this behavior behind closed doors and protect these men from prosecution.

I'm surprised to see some of the comments on news websites. They are giving excuses like it happens when you are in a war. Taliban scums could also give this excuse and the killing cycle would continue. At the end poor innocent people are killed who are just trying to survive. What a world we are living in.

No kidding. It's hard enough to try and build a foundation on a plot of quicksand corruption but to continually take swings with a hammer at the fragile foundation just hastens the rate of failure.

If Afghan are killed the killer is automatically assumed to be insane, if americans are killed, killer is a terrorist.

I remember reading a story of the prophet peace be upon him and it was about how he had heard that the enemy had captured and tortured a muslim woman, he then declared war for that one womans honour. Today we have many many women and children being tortured and raped and abused and no one bats an eyelid. Where are the men of today who wish to be like our prophet!?
This soldier was described by one afghan woman to have grabbed another woman by the hair and smashed her head against the wall and ripping her hair out.
May Allah subhana wataala grant them all jannat ul firdous.
