Re: 130+ dead in heat-wave in Karachi/Sindh
Aren't people who die in ramadan as muslims are shuhada ?
Anyway, I found out that one of our relatives on my mom's side died of heat stroke. Irony is that my khala was talking to her on the phone few days back and the relative said it looks like it would be our last talk.
Re: 130+ dead in heat-wave in Karachi/Sindh
and you were saying?
Anyways, Sindh/Karachi is facing deadly combination of PPP’s non-existent Sindh govt while PMLN’s incompetent/“experienced” govt in the center… adding fuel to the fire is fasting+weather.
Re: 130+ dead in heat-wave in Karachi/Sindh
are you kidding me ? since when our religious scholars have announced anything which will provide relief to common people? they are here to increase sufferings not to reduce
and even if these poor laborers who have to spent time under the sun in 40+ degrees and work dont fast, there is no water or food available for them. the whole city is shut down in ramadan. dhabas closed, tea stalls closed, restaurants closed, people have even removed self-serviced water coolers outside their homes in their so called respect for ramandan. mohammad hanif wrote a moving piece on this social evilness. pls read it here.
Re: 130+ dead in heat-wave in Karachi/Sindh
Just to present another point of clarity on this, at least from my perspective, for clergy to issue a fatwa declaring not fasting for anyone other than the exempt as stated in Quran would be akin to changing Allah's commandments. So please do not feel that they're wrong by not indulging in this, no muslim should.
As for the other issue, then yes I think the places of food should remain open because Ramadan is about self-discipline, not about closing shop and returning to do business after iftar. That sort of circumvents the spirit of Fasting in my view, and Allah knows best. I know nothing.
The bottomline of this all is that there need to be relief camps in the months of summer whether or not Ramadan occurs in summer days. To cite an example for U.S., people are allowed to take refuge in Administration buildings. And there are cooling centers set up. Until the electricity problem is tackled, the least a city administration for any urban area can do is set up at least cooled rest places running on generators during the daytime. This would be a small price to pay for being voted into power, and even then they would be doing the 1% of what their job is while in Government.
Lack of sincerity, and lack of infrastructure and foresight are to blame. Ulema can be blamed for the 99 out of 100 other problems as per current trend. Lets keep our focus on the problem and solution. Who's to say if those same people were not fasting, they would still have left us? Mohammad Hanif cannot guarantee that. That's shifting the blame.
Looks like PPP found another escape khoti like thar…it was natural and yearly death notanki.
Re: 130+ dead in heat-wave in Karachi/Sindh
this is something that is not going to happen. governance simply does not exist in sindh. so frustrating

fair points brother. and yes govt needs to do a lot more to alleviate this sad situation and yes ulema cannot change what is stated in quran.
but my point was that even if there is something that ulema can announce to help fellow muslims, they will be hesitant to do it especially if it is a bit unconventional. and there is history of subcontinental ulema to be extremely conservative. for example, why cant our ulema in pakistan announce that dhabas, resutaurants, tea shops, and general grocery stores can remain open but just put a curtain. that is exactly what i observed in indonesia and Malaysia this year. no muslim or scholar has any problem with it.
Islam does not say that shut down everything...but can you expect pakistani ulema make such an announcement to help people? no way. as a matter of fact they pushed govt to pass ramadan ordinance which forced all these places to be closed and if anyone is found eating outside, he or she will can be put in jail. not to mention in some cases public beat him miserably. i doubt islam has ordered any of this...and now travelers, patients, kids, foreigners all struggle miserably in Pakistan. I know this because i have seen how lahore Faisalabad are shut down in ramadan and how it hurts people.
ramadan is month of blessings....month of forgiveness..month of rehmat....month of peace...month of establishing connection with allah....month of soul searching....but thx to our ulema, they will create problems wherever they can due to their conservativeness.
