11 Feb 2008:
Karachi Feb 11: The City District Government Karachi has inked an agreement with a US based firm Global EnviroScience Technologies for installation of a 4000 mega watts power plant and 100 million gallon daily Desalination Plant with an investment of $2.8 billion and $150 million respectively.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in this connection on Sunday by representative of City Government Karachi and the Californian firm.
On behalf of City Government the Managing Director of KW&SB Ghulam Arif Khan signed the documents for desalination plant and the EDO E&IP Dr. Shahab Imam signed the MoU for power plant. The US firm was represented by its Chairman Martin Lizer. The ceremony was attended by Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal, US Consul General in Karachi Ms. Katherine, DCO Karachi Javed Hanif and other officers.
Under the agreement the City Government Karachi will provide 400 acres land to company for installation of power plant and 50 acre land for establishment of desalination plant in Korangi.
The company would in the first phase complete the installation of power plant with 2000 mega watts capacity in a period of 18 months.
The City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal addressing the signing ceremony said that the power plant would help to overcome the shortage of electricity in the country mainly in Karachi.
He said that a major economic and industrial growth has been seen in the country due to the positive policies adopted by present government. “Industrial progress along with significant raise in the standard of citizen’s life has enabled even middle class to afford having air conditioners in their homes and comparing past 25 years the sale of air conditioners in the last few years has increased by many thousands units which has resulted in more demand for electricity thus creating a difference between the supply and demand of power,” The City Nazim said and added that the government however was making all efforts to diminish this difference in the least time while considering the future requirements. He said that the federal government has already approved the installation of 4000 mega watts power plant in Karachi that would made operational in 18 months and this plant would also help to fulfill the power requirements of future industries in the Karachi.
The Nazim further viewed that the infrastructure development and active role played by city government has paved the way for rapid progress and the same was helped by our public private partnership policy. Many of world’s biggest firms have already selected Karachi for their investment which is a big achievement.
Nazim Karachi said that the present requirement of water in Karachi was 600 mgd. Despite of having enough water for our requirement, we have however turned to desalination plants.
“Already the installation of a 50mgd desalination plant was under progress in Hawkesbay and now we have initiated work on another such plant with 100 mgd capacity. All these projects would bring about positive changes in the lives of common citizens and millions of people would get livelihood with both of these projects,” He said.
The Chairman of Global EnviroScience Technologies Mr. Martin Lizer addressing the ceremony said that being one of the biggest firms of the world his company would install pollution free plants in Karachi with the aim to serve citizens of Karachi. He further viewed that the introduction of American Technology in both of these projects would provide more convenience to common men in Karachi.
The officiating US Consul General in Karachi Ms. Katherine said that people in Pakistan and specially Karachiites would benefit from American Technology used in these projects.
