10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

By Ansar Abbasi

ISLAMABAD: Ten more bulletproof Mercedes Benz limos, each costing Rs 70 million, will join the fleet of new 30 Mercedes, being bought from taxpayers’ money for the country’s VIPs and VVIPs.

Information pouring out of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat reveals that two sets of new Mercedes- 30 and 10- are being bought from under different heads to stagger the massive spending on this controversial purchase.

Sources confided to The News that the 10 bulletproof Mercedes were ordered by the PM’s Secretariat last year much prior to the 30, being purchased by the interior ministry.

Out of the 10 Mercedes ordered by the PM office, three have already arrived whereas the remaining seven are in the pipeline and would reach Islamabad soon. The sources said that although the PM secretariat was already in the process of getting 10 new protected Mercedes, it still felt the need for more expensive limos.

However, to avoid purchasing all the required Mercedes from the budget of one particular agency, it had asked the Interior Ministry to move the case for the purchase of additional 30 Mercedes Benz and 20 Land Cruisers for the protection of VIPs and VVIPs.

Interestingly the Interior Ministry has also distributed its share of spending on this controversial purchase by asking the provinces to buy the Land Cruisers and the expensive jammers to be installed in these vehicles. Consequently all this billions of rupees purchases would appear under different heads showing no tally and the actual amount spent.

However, the sources said that the one-time induction of 40 new bulletproof Mercedes would be a new record for the Shaukat Aziz government.

The exiled former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during his first term, had also purchased 40 Mercedes Benz for the country’s VVIPs but very few of them were bulletproof. A bulletproof Mercedes costs several times more than the ordinary one. All these vehicles are being purchased in relaxation of a ban on purchase of new vehicles. The prime minister had to use his discretionary power to relax the ban.

nice one mr aziz, I am disgusted at this purchase. with all army everywhere and you had to add these to your armour!
on same path again

having double ministers for every ministry,
the operating cost of government of Pakistan doesnt match the lifestyle of most Pakistanis.

you want to buy these buy it with paying taxes and from your own foking pocket. these will be used for some months by the loved ones and then bought in acution for pricvate use or sale again like all governers and CM and PM does it. import duty free and sell and earn some bucks.

Shame!

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Easy for you to say. No one has ever tried to murder you in your car. People have tried to kill Mr Aziz in his, tried to kill General Musharraf in his, and have tried to or even successfully killed a number of other VIPs in theirs in the past few years.

While such extremists are still running around Pakistan, bullet proof cars are important to protect the political, military, and economic leadership of the country.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

ok i agree on security issue, but does 1 PM need fleet of 40 bullet proof limos??? in adition to what they have already got?

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Well they need them in every city, the guy doesnt travel by car from karach ot lahore. Are you kidding me the sindhis will loot him. There are big dacoities on the highways over there.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

The article makes it clear that the new cars are for the country’s VIPs (plural), not just for the PM. The government leaders and cabinet ministers would need these for transport. Add in military leadership (remember the attack on the army general in karachi a few months ago), judges and lawyers (who do get threats from the terrorist groups they are trying the members of), key civil servants, and you get a lot of people in Pakistan, who are in roles where people have been attacked before, and who need protection while under transportation.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Let me ask one simple question:

What if the driver has bomb strapped on his tummy (or plastic explosives shoved in his ass). How would that protect the VIP people?

These VIPs are the curse to the nation. they are deliberately keeping Pakistan underdeveloped by spending money on this kinda nonsense.

Here’s a simple theory of safety: The more corrupt you are, the more you protect yourself. An honest person has nothing to fear.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Doesn't pakisatani army have a/c in their tanks. The PM and the General can ride around in tanks they are bullet proof and pak army will get some return on their investment.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

^^

LOL not a bad idea, vvips vips driving around in tanks

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

No, because the metal treads on tanks and armoured personnel carriers inflict damage on roads that they pass over if they travel at any speed faster than a crawl.

And yes, all of the tanks that Pakistan has are fully air conditioned.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

i like it... ridin in jaguars wid da tims... bentleys... mercedez.... dis pervez musha is pimp yo... i dig hiz style.... respeck.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Simply idiotic. Would these cars deter bombs? Attackers now use bombs more than bullets. 700m for 10 cars, ullu ke pathay. marnay do salay VVIPs ko jo mulk ko choos rahay hayn.

Govt also raised monthly salary of MPs by 15%!!!! meaning extra 1million per month.... shabash.... BB and NS ne jo chhora thaa woh tum loot lo.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

I just read further in the article 40 Mercs at 70m each = 2800m = Rs 2,800,000,000
10 Land Cruisers are apart from this budget.

2.8 billion rupees just for the cars, lanat hay aisee hakoomat pe.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

I think the high cost is due to the jammers. And these jammers protect the vehicle from rocket launchers and remote controlled bombs. Thats why you heard that the bomb detonated a few minutes after Musharraf's motorcade has passed. Because the signals were jammed. I think US has provided that technology to Musharraf, for his protection.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Article suggests that government has told provincial government to buy jammers and SUVs, so it looks like that they are on separate budget and 70m is for one bullet proof Merc.

Even if it does include jammer, the price is really very high and of course taxpayers are paying for it ... not the government officials who make much more than public.

They really are "haakim" and not "public servants".

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Bullet proof limos hah if your time is up your time is up no amount of bullet proof mercs are going to keep you from malik ul mawt!

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Maybe if the ISI had not trained its jihadis in building and planting bombs we would not be in such a situation. But what do I know, army is always right as we were always told in Pakistan.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Guys it's al part of the billion $ aid that they got, you just cant go out andbuy more nukee gadgets you gotta buy Amerikkkan with that AID.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

Yes, modern VIP limos such as these are as well armoured as a World War 2 tank, thanks to advances in material sciences that allow greater protection from less mass of material.

Many of these kind of limos will not only protect you from shrapnel from nearby bomb explosions, but will also survive hits from light anti-tank rockets through innovations such as integrated composite armour.

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

I guess this is the price we pay for governance. Such expenditures are unavoidable in almost all countries. It is easy for us to say 'oh, if they are good/ uncorrupt, who would want to get rid of them'. The truth is, there are enough madmen/ zealots around who would think otherwise. Was not Gandhi considered a man of the masses before he was assasinated?

I am also sure that we would be the first one to say, if god forbid, somebody is assasinated, "how can a government which cannot protect a vip protect the common people?"

Of course, are there cheaper options? Can the cars be bullet proof xxxxs rather than bullet proof mercs?

Re: 10 more bulletproof Mercedes limos ordered

It is nice to hear pak. army tanks have a/cs. Do they need to be plugged in ? do you have any btu information?
I did remember somebody mention before that the pak army tanks have metal treads, but i did not know they have roads in pakisatan. Thank you for your very very kind information.
