Newly appointed secretary general of the human watchdog Amnesty International, Irene Zubaida Khan of Bangladesh arrives, 17 August 2001 in Dakar, for the opening ceremony of the organization’s 25th International Council, which runs to 25 August. Khan is the first woman and Asian to take the post of secretary general.

When 44-year-old Bangladeshi Irene Zubaida Khan took over as secretary general of Amnesty International on last week, she became the first woman, the first Asian and the first Muslim to head the human rights watchdog.

Khan formally replaced Senegal’s Pierre Sane as head of the London-based organisation on last Friday after a 21-year career with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Born on December 24, 1956 in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, she is an expert in public law, international law and human rights law after studies at the University of Manchester, England and at Harvard Law School in the United States.

She began her career as a legal assistant with the International Commission of Lawyers in Geneva, before joining the UNHCR in 1980 as a counselor for the protection of refugees.

During postings in Southeast Asia, Pakistan, Britain and the Republic of Ireland, Khan is said to have always been particularly motivated by her work in the field.

In 1995 the UNHCR appointed her chief of mission of their Indian bureau, where she was responsible for the protection of 200,000 refugees. Three years later, she was named head of information and research at the agency, before becoming deputy director of the international protection service in 1999.

Khan becomes the seventh secretary general of Amnesty International in its 40-year history.

A typical crticism from muslim bros. runs like this
"I see a whole lot “iviewer’s” rushing out to congratulate Ms. IRENE Zubaida Khan. Before rushing out in droves to congratulate her as the first muslim this and first muslim that, did they see her dress? It sure is muslim , oh and her name “Irene” sure is muslim. Please have we been so dis illlusioned, that the first person we see with a hint of muslim identity, we rush towards them as our saviour? People please! Investigate thoroughly before bestowing your laurels! Being Muslim, does not mean have a muslim name! and this also goes for the billions of muslim “morons” who rush to adulate those bollwood film actors who carry muslim names ( and to be very honest I do watch those movies, yes I do, do despise those muslim name carrying actors) "

Even before the ink has dried ,we muslim have started criticizing on frivilous & nick picking about her dress whic is common in Bangladesh & also to some extent Pakistan i.e. Sari

Is there islamic dress in Pakistan for gods sake .If arab dress is Islamic then most of the Pakistan wear unislamic shalwar Kameez,
Havent we learnt anything in last 30 yrs after our 1/2 population rebelled against only for this attitude.

Im delighted that she is a women. Period. I prefer women leaders in all walks of life. Men have been controlling the world long enough, and have made a mess of it.

and why is that Tanhaa, because women have let men make a mess

If every woman stands up for herself we wouldnt be needing these orgainzations
and perhaps it will help if we stop judging individuals in light of their genitals and start appreciating their talents, capabilities and brains

I agree with you Anchal behan. We should NOT pay attention to the genitals. But that is our ideal . We are very far from it. The best we can do at present is equal representation in all walks of life.

To my mind there are two types of wrongs:

  1. Acts of commission. Men have been doing these wrongs against both men and women since time began.

  2. Acts of ommission. Women have been standing by and allowed that to happen, especially when they have so much power over men.

I know both are bad. But if I have to grade the two acts. I think acts of commission are worse. Because they happen first.

good news

Anchal, i totally agree with you on this. Because we have prejudices and keep on assuming before knowing the "truth".
Its about time that we start seeing the qualities in a person (skills, abilities..) before we brand him/her as an idiot, fool, moron etc etc.
