It absolutely is painful. He will be remembered as a true legend who had an untarnished career but ruined it somewhat in a cup final in a moment of pure madness.
I am glad that he didnt have to face the agony of watching his team lift the cup from the dressing room.

being a professional for such a long time he should not have done that. that too in a match of such importance. his headbutting was evident but wht italian player said was not so ref was right in sending him off.its a sad end to his glorious career but he could have done better than headbutting the player.

People will remember him for headbutt, his final but I'll remember him for something else.
-His skills, hustle and stamina. So many french players were subsitutited instead of Zidane who, still at 34 refuesd to leave his team. Even in the Final when he injured his arm, he stayed.
-His leadership, France was nothing and he made them the contender. How many players in the world can do that? To bring a team from disappointment to an almost glory. He had his signature all over France game and took them to final. It is an amazing feat.
-His composure. In all, a shy composed and no flashy Zidane showed everyone that this game is about basics, practice, hustle and stamina.
One of the best Soccer players to ever live.
