Zimbabwe Cricket - RIP (?)

I am sure many of you are following the events in Zimbabwe, where a few days ago, the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) fired Heath Streak (probably the only recognized international player in the team) not only from captaincy but also announced that Streak is retired from cricket. Streak denied it. Following that, now 13 players of Zimbabwe have been sacked/fired. So the team is now almost in complete shambles.

The issue at heart is that of color. Apparently the government of Robert Mugabe wants more black players in the team, while players want selection on merit.

Whatever the case, its tragic. Seeing that Zimbabwe’s cricket is now in completely a mess, and perhaps also because of fear of stiff fines and possible expulsion (with Ehsan Mani at the helm at ICC) ECB has now had a change of heart and are willing to tour Zimbabwe, after all.

Does Zim deserve a test status?

The Flower brothers are out. Neil Johnson went on to play in English County. Streak is on a stake. They lost twice to Bangladesh.

Can they compete at test level?

if this incident is not resolved then their test status should be taken away.Without streak,Ervine,Balignaut etc this team is worst than Kenya and bangladesh

And Taibu is captain.

I bet ,if these 13 guys dont play for ZIM then ZIM cant even beat a team from GS lead by Ehsan bhai.
Really this stinks.

Zimbabwe players to boycott Sri Lanka series

April 15, 2004 21:24 IST

Thirteen of Zimbabwe’s most experienced players including former captain Heath Streak have refused to play in the home series against Sri Lanka starting next week.

The players said they took the decision after a row over selection.

They said they had been told by the Zimbabwe Cricket Union that former Test bowler Mpumelelo Mbangwa would be included in a new selection panel, as the players had suggested, only to discover that Mbangwa had not yet been approached.

The latest twist of a saga which began with Streak’s departure as team captain means Zimbabwe, already struggling to compete at Test and one-day level, could face the Sri Lankans with a second-string side.

“They told us last night that Mbangwa was a selector, they told us that he had phoned him and confirmed it,” a player told Reuters from Harare.

“This morning Mbangwa told someone that he discovered he was a selector on the Internet last night.”

Mbangwa, who now works as a television commentator, declined to comment on Thursday, while the ZCU said he had declined the position.

Zimbabwe are scheduled to play five one-dayers, the first next Tuesday, and two Tests, against Sri Lanka.

The affair began when the ZCU announced Streak, a world-class bowler and the mainstay of the side, had quit all cricket after the Board rejected an ultimatum over the composition of the selectors’ panel. Streak’s father later denied his son had resigned.

The 13 players are Streak, Stuart Carlisle, Grant Flower, Craig Wishart, Andy Blignaut, Raymond Price, Gary Brent, Sean Ervine, Travis Friend, Barney Rogers, Trevor Gripper, Richard Sims and Neil Ferreria.

The ZCU is scheduled to announce the squad to play against Sri Lanka later on Thursday.

Come on.. this is not being fair and balanced. Ehsan bhai alone can knock off Zimbabwe in the present state. Team ki tau zaroorat hi nahi parni.

The stand-off between the 15 rebel cricketers and the Zimbabwe Cricket Union may be nearing an end, after it was announced by the ZCU that the players would be returning to training on April 30, and that they were back in consideration for selection. The possibility of a breakthrough had earlier been raised with the news that the players were prepared to accept the appointment of Much Musunda to act as mediator.

Musunda, a prominent businessman, was the choice of the Zimbabwe Cricket Union and Heath Streak. But despite rumours to the contrary, so far there have been no talks between any of the rebels and the board, and none will take place until the banned players have met with their lawyer.

There are, inevitably, many stumbling blocks. Musunda is not in the country at the moment, and nothing will happen until he returns. Even when he does, the rebels are not holding out too much hope that the ZCU will offer any meaningful concessions. “We have to see what the ZCU come back to us with,” Grant Flower said. “And so far they have come back with nothing. If it’s not settled by mediation — and I don’t think it will be on an amicable basis — it would have to go to arbitration.” So far, the ZCU has ruled out arbitration.

They rebels stated that they are all keen to play again - although an obstacle is that they clearly have no faith that the ZCU will honour any commitments, and so they will do nothing until they see actions rather than words. “The guys are only going to make themselves available for selection once that process has happened,” Flower told The Times. “If we did it the other way round, the ZCU wouldn’t take it seriously; they would draw it out, keep us playing while we were still in dispute with them and not resolve this until we are at the end of our contracts.”

But the rebels are prepared to start training again as an act of good faith, and in the hope that the mess will be sorted out sooner rather than later. In the meantime, the ZCU has named an unchanged side for the fifth and final one-day match in Harare on Thursday.

35 all out, worked wonders. Bought ZCU to its senses really quickly.

ZCU seems to have the backing of Mugabe... and if thats the case ... it will be futile to hope they will come to their senses. They are just playing for time. They couldn't care less if Zimbabwe is stripped of its test status. They are just political goons.
