Though films like Zille Shah are a step forward from the Gujjar-themed films, they still make for some pretty regressive cinema. Cinema that doesn't speak for the urbane, literate audiences.

Its been a hit, according to some falthoo internet site I go to - the only one that keeps tabs on lollywood crap anymore.
shrugs I've given up hope. Film industry is dead, and ignorants like Shaan are just jumping on its corpse now for craps and giggles.

Shaan is an idiot. He used to diss Punjabi cinema and blamed people like Sultan Rahi for the mess in the industry (after he made a comeback in 1996 and started to direct some flicks) and then the hypocrite went to tread the same path. Methinks he has political ambitions, and is using Gujjar cinema to connect with his potential votebank in the rural and backward areas of Pak.

No, I think he realizes that the only people in Pakistan who bother watching Pakistani films anymore are folks in rural punjab (rural sindh to an extent too, and they'll watch the Punjabi movies). Not to say that their tastes are lower or anything, but there's not much else to do. Urban entertainment has expanded and folks in urban areas prefer watching TV and DVD's in their own home. So, he's tapping into the only market left in Pakistan, which would really not make him an idiot. And as he's the only one with patience to do it, then he's got monopoly over the industry. Hence he can put food on his table. I don't blame him, honestly. Pity, because he's such a talented actor and he could do way better on the big screen.
Ramchand Pakistani and Khulay Asmaan kay neeche have flopped? That's the news from some website that keeps tabs on box office ratings, but have you guys heard the same? I don't know if my source is biased. If they did flop, then it gives even more credence to the theory that the only folks willing to view Pakistani cinema anymore are Punjabis - if they can't relate to the movie, they wont watch it.

You're totally wrong there. Its like saying every other film from across the border should be on AIDS, poverty etc just coz they have the largest number of AIDS cases in the world and also happen to have the largest slum in the world. You rarely see that. Focus on the good side of your country, thats what our cinema needs to do. Entertain the masses, please, get some positiveness going on! Unfortunately in recent times, its become all about tawaifs, brothels and gujjars, whatever "decent" cinema comes out is about marital rapes, gang rapes (the subject of Syed Noor's upcoming Price of honor), terrorism (Khuda Ke Lliye, though well intentioned) etc. The Mehreen Jabbar film was an exception there. Where on EARTH are films like Jeeva, Sargam, Mujhe Chand Chahiye which actually were oriented towards progressive, positive cinema.
