Zehri made Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture

The PPP Senator Mir Israrullah Zehri has been made Minister for Food and Agriculture. This is the same Zehri who defended the savage killing of three women, an act in which his brother was involved.

There were three of them. They were abducted at gunpoint, hurled into a jeep, and taken to a remote area. Dragged out of the car by six men, the women were beaten severely before being shot. Still breathing, they were then hurled into a ditch, covered with earth and stone, and buried alive. Their bodies were found half-eaten by animals.

Honour that was hurt because they chose to marry the men they loved in what are called ‘free will marriages.’ Honour that bloodied the same hands that once cradled the crib.

And what of the two women whose names are not known, but were also pushed into the ditch? Their crime had been to protest against the inconceivable violence inflicted upon the three.

Yet I choose to remember these three for a reason. The jeep that carried the women to their graves bore a Government number plate. Abdul Sattar Umrani was among the six men involved in the heinous act. Umrani is the brother of Mir Israrullah Zehri, a Senator from Baluchistan.

Six weeks after the brutal killings, when Senator Yasmin Shah raised the issue on the floor of the Parliament, she was met with outrage as Zehri proclaimed:

“These are centuries-old traditions, and I will continue to defend them.Only those who indulge in immoral acts should be afraid.”

For the next few days, newspapers carried reports reenacting how members of the parliament were ‘stunned’ by Zehri’s statements. There were protests, talk shows, columns and more protests.

Three years later, the perpetrators of that heinous crime have not been punished. However, the man who condoned that crime has been allotted the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
