KOLKATA: Al-Qaeda’s new chief Ayman al-Zawahiri is in Pakistan, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Kolkata on Monday.
Egyptian cleric al-Zawahri, took over the organisation after Osama bin Laden’s killing on May 2 last year by US Navy SEALs in Pakistan’s Abbottabad town.
Clinton said: “We want to disable Al Qaeda. We believe Zawahiri is in Pakistan.”
How many of you will be surprised if Zawahiri also springs up from Pakistan? Given Pakistan’s potential for jihadi tourism and our unannounced ‘My Second Home’ programme for jihadists around the globe and beyond, at least I won’t be surprised if he is also discovered somewhere from Rawalpindi like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed or Mullah Baradar in Karachi.
While we can also discard Secretary Clinton’s statement as a ‘diplomatic appetizer’ for Indian audience, but things on the ground have mostly been speaking against our innocence. We may very well have another dubious distinction in our fate. After all, we are the ‘Most Favourite Nation’ of international terrorists.

Btw, contrary to conspiracy theories among Pakistanis, Pakistan's biggest threat is internal from jihadi mullahs & terrorists. And, those destabilizing forces have tactical support from Pakistani establishment, namely ISI & the military. Pakistan today is no go area for most foreigners/investors except jihadis from around the world.
Brahmdagh bugti and marri who are in switzerland and some of these guys are in UK. Ttp militants like molvi fazlullah and others are in the sanctuaries in eastern Afghanistan where the Americans don't want to do any operations.
FM says: US should provide evidence on Zawahiri presence.
ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said on Monday that if the United States has any solid intelligence information on the presence of al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri in Pakistan, it should be shared so that the country can look into the matter accordingly. Ties between the two countries had been affected after an attack on a check post had killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.
She said that talks between Pakistan and the United States in light of the terms of engagement set by Parliament were still ongoing and may take some time to settle. She said there was no halt in the talks and the impression of failure was wrong.
The foreign minister said the US will hopefully respect the Pakistani parliament’s recommendations, which have been directly linked to the stoppage of drone strikes.
