Zardari warns PPP candidates against changing loyalty.

Why is Zardari issuing threats. Is he already worried about defections after the elections?

So much for unity within PPP.

LAHORE: PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari warned party candidates of dire consequences in case of changing party loyalty after winning elections saying party workers will not spare such an act.

Sources informed The News that Zardari also hinted at major reorganization of the party cadres, after the elections. He was holding a meeting with party candidates, federal council members, office-bearers and workers at Bilawal House here Wednesday, where he later addressed a general assembly.

Zardari said anyone who wished to leave the party must do so before the polls, adding if any member of the PPP tried to become a ‘Lota’ (defector) after winning February 18 elections, the party workers will not spare him. “People are going to vote not just for you, but for Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and therefore your defection will be taken as disloyalty to her blood, which cannot be spared,” said the co-chairman, in what many party leaders believed was a hard but pre-emptive move to enforce party loyalty after the polls.

Zardari said the PPP and its workers were now attached to the grave of their martyred leader and none should reserve any misconception in this regard. The PPP leader also warned against any rigging plans, saying the PPP could both die and kill for its cause. Zardari shrugged off statements regarding future breakup of the PPP, saying only those parties engineered by the establishment had a history of withering away, while the PPP was still intact despite undergoing so many testing times. He said the PPP will win the polls without any support from the establishment. “In that case, we will not share power with the establishment, as we must not let the blood of BB go waste,” he said, adding the party must bring about a massive change, in the way country was being run, on the lines devised by Benazir.

Expressing confidence in party prospects in the polls, Zardari said February 18 will bring a dawn of victory for the PPP. However, he advised party candidates not to take elections for granted, saying they must finalize the names of polling agents on priority basis. Zardari asked the part candidates to stall any rigging plans on the polling day, advising them to keep their eyes open. However, he advised party candidates to refrain from crossing the bounds of law.

Zardari said party workers must not be dazzled by huge hoardings and billboards of the opponents, referring to the PML-Q, terming it a violation of Election Commission rules. He lauded contribution of the Punjab for supremacy of democracy, saying Punjabis were spearheading the mission of Ms Bhutto, as many had died alongside the PPP leader in Rawalpindi. On his Punjab visit, Zardari said he will be fighting the war of survival of Pakistan from the heart of the country, Punjab, and that is why he had come here.

Earlier, PPP co-chairman held separate meetings with party’s candidates on general seats and with reserved seats for women candidates. During the meeting with women candidates on reserved seats, Zardari mentioned the great respect late Ms Bhutto held for party’s women activists and their sacrifices for the party. He said he was willing to take along the women along in the struggle for democracy. Zardari also held a general meeting with party office-bearers, members of Federal Council and workers and leaders of affiliated wings like People’s Students Federation and Youth Wing, etc.

Re: Zardari warns PPP candidates against changing loyalty.

He is worried that after the landslide victory by PML(Q) his less than 30 MNA’s would defect to the ever popular Chaudhries. After all no one ever came out on the streets to protest against the Chaudhries. :hehe:
