**Zardari, Pervaiz finalise power-sharing deal

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi are said to have given final touches to their new power-sharing deal over a late night secret dinner at the Presidency last Sunday.

But this time, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain decided to stay away from the meeting with Zardari and preferred to send Pervaiz Elahi along with Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain and Moonis Elahi to ink an unannounced deal with the president, who was said to be desperate to get two-third majority in the Senate at all costs in the forthcoming elections in March.

That is why, the sources said, Zardari was not bothered at all about his own shocking allegation against the same leaders of the PML-Q a year back for playing a hand in the murder of his wife Benazir Bhutto.

An intelligence agency guy, who got himself transferred from FIA, and is based in Lahore, is said to have played a major role in facilitating the meeting between these two rival camps, and was said to be present at the dinner. In addition to him, a property tycoon of Islamabad, who is said to be a mutual friend of both the politicians, was also behind the scene to ensure that his two friends do come close to each other to get rid of Shahbaz Sharif in Punjab.

The sources said under the proposed deal, Moonis Elahi would be the senior minister in the new government in Punjab while, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain would be the consensus candidate for the Senate along with Kamil Ali Agha, whose term is also coming to an end this March. The sources said the same formula would also be applied at the federal level once the Senate elections were over as the PML-Q leaders might get some share in the ministries.

The secret meeting in which future plan of cooperation was finalised between Zardari and Elahi, was arranged by Deputy Director Intelligence Bureau Lahore Ahmed Riaz Sheikh, who was also present at the dinner held at the presidency on Sunday night. However, Riaz Sheikh told The News that this was incorrect information as he was doing his NIPA course and did not have any knowledge about the meeting.

Meanwhile, talking to The News, Moonis Elahi said he did not know anything about the meeting. But he said there might have been an invitation from the Presidency. But he said he did not meet anyone and to him this meeting did not take place.

This correspondent also contacted Dr Qayaum Soomro, personal secretary to the president to get his views. But, he neither denied nor confirmed the meeting between Elahi and Zardari at the Presidency over a dinner. After a brief pause, he told this correspondent that let him first talk to someone before denying or confirming the meeting. He promised to return the call, which he never did unlike his traditional temperament, which made him quite popular among the journalists since he started lobbying for imprisoned Zardari since 1996. Before filing this story this correspondent again made a call to Dr Soomro to get his response but this time he did not attend the call.

Earlier, the first indirect contact between the Chaudhrys and Zardari camp was developed through Dr Qayaum Soomro when the frightened Chaudhrys of Gujrat had secretly visited his house to break the ice between the spouse of assassinated Benazir Bhutto and Pervaiz Elahi after Zardari had declared the PML-Q as ‘Qatil League’ during his first press conference after chairing the party meeting at Naudero on December 30, 2007.

Dr Soomro had also visited the houses of Chaudhrys many times over dinner as it was confirmed by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain while talking to The News. Once the powerful Chaudhrys had visited the house of private secretary to President Zardari only after the Punjab government had decided to tighten its noose around Moonis Elahi on charges of corruption in the Bank of Punjab scandal. However, Moonis had strongly rejected the reports of his involvement in the scam. After few days of this secret meeting between Soomro and Chaudhrys, the main architect of the scam Hamesh Khan was allowed to fly out of Pakistan from Peshawar airport despite the fact that his name was on the Exit Control List. This great help had played as a major role in bridging the gap between Zardari and Chaudhrys.

Later, Governor Punjab Salman Taseer was asked to stay in touch with the Chaudhrys in Punjab so that his frequent meetings could facilitate the final meeting between Zardari and Chaudhrys to ink the deal at a ‘proper’ time. The sources said, this was for the first time that Zardari invited the Chaudhrys at the Presidency where he discussed in detail the future political cooperation. The source said, the fast diminishing chances of an alliance with Nawaz Sharif had finally forced the Chaudhrys to enter into a deal with Zardari to get something at least for Moonis Elahi and Shujaat Hussain, who otherwise are finding it difficult to get one seat from Punjab in the senate election because of rising influence of the PML-N in the ranks of disgruntled elements within the PML-Q.

Zardari, Pervaiz finalise power-sharing deal

Re: Zardari-Pervaiz finalise power-sharing deal

thats a shame,

Re: Zardari-Pervaiz finalise power-sharing deal

I hope this news is true, and then we can see the end of Zardari & Co, like we saw of Musharaf and before Musharaf NS in 1999.

Pervazi Illahi is second name of Bad luck, whom ever he is with, will not go out of power, but even struggle to survivi, NS had that in 1999, Musharaf with all the backing from US and ARMY had it, and now it is Zardari's...

Re: Zardari-Pervaiz finalise power-sharing deal

If this goes through, its about time the PML[N], PTI, JI unite and stop being nice and bring this Government along with Zardari down, they are all set to sweep the next polls. No NRO or other BS this time around, we need a Government elected truly by the people.

Re: Zardari-Pervaiz finalise power-sharing deal

I like this SMS.... Great Mr. Zardari,,,, Pehlay Begum maree, ab kiya awam kee baree

Well, Everybody knows what PML-Q is and wuts it upto. Its an illegal birth of Pervez Musharraf and a group of politicians who were desperate to get into power after Musharraf's coming into power. And thats the reason that this group is still so much horny to get back into govt even after getting rejected from the people of Pakistan whom we call "Awam".

And as about Zardari, he definitely has no rules or principles to follow. He is ever-ready to make promises and then break them no matter if its a promise of restoring CJ or sending the ISI-chief to New Delhi. He is a man without moral values.

So when two parties of similar nature join hands, the result is the same as we are seeing now. I'm sure PML-Q will be joining the govt very soon. The miseries of Pakistani awam are not going to lessen in future.

lets see what card PMLN would play...

Re: Zardari-Pervaiz finalise power-sharing deal

If anybody thinks PML(N) and Punjab would just be a piece of cake for PPP lives in fools paradise.First of all 9.2 Crore people of Punjab will not accept it at all.Secondly PML(N) then would be on streets and central government would become dis-functional and we will be back in 1988 and 1993 politics

Most important question : PPP in Punjab has not even a single leader who is even compareable to be Shahbaz's Political Secretary !! Raja Riaz is the senior minister in Punjab from PPP.He cannot even speak Urdu nicely , what to talk about English with foreign delegations. PPP or PML(Q) dont contain a single figure in Punjab whos adminstrative skills are even 10% of Shahbaz !!

Re: Zardari-Pervaiz finalise power-sharing deal

sigh What is to become of us when the same corrupt come to power on a regular basis. And people wonder why I am in favour of a French Revolution style coup d'etat.

what a better alternative ..PML-N....we'd need to get used to a different set of broken promises...

by the way who elected this government...aliens?

Re: Zardari-Pervaiz finalise power-sharing deal

^ Much better than PML[Q], MQM crooks for sure. And Zardari's the one who you should refer the broken promises to.

its hard to remain a believer in democracy with the sorry lot we have, but hanging on for the long haul is the only option.

there are no heroes. if there were one, he should have the patience (and ability) to come to power through the channels available.

the last few saviours who circumvented the established 'order' arent any more palatable. People welcomed Musharraf for the same reasons you welcome a french revolution, with the same expectations. How'd that work out?

If an honest leader ever does come to power, the courts would be more effective than guillotines.

Yeah its sad we have no leadership at all at the highest level of government. Call it a grand chess board.

**An open declaration of war

By Mohammad Malick**

Oh what a session. It’s been a while since I was last confronted with the difficult choice of where to start. Do I begin by the irony of a cancer stricken Syed Allaudin forcing the house to discuss the equally lethal suffering of the living-dead of Swat? Or do I start with the war between Nawaz Sharif and President Asif Zardari finally being made official by the leader of the opposition? Or should my opening question be why Rehman Malik while being present in the House did not speak on the Swat issue and instead passed the buck to government’s perpetual fall guy (or person) Sherry Rehman? Or should my first words deal with the last ones of Muneer Aurakzai, who shredded the government claim of meaningful actions by the much trumpeted and officially celebrated House Committee on national security?

The **war drums couldn’t have rolled louder, or the gauntlet thrown with anymore disdain. **And trust Ch Nisar Khan to play the aggressor with that extra panache. It’s obvious that the fiery leader of the opposition relishes a good old power fight and boy, did he take it to the presidency. Clearly, Nisar was smarting from the latest remark of President Zardari, who himself irked at his government’s being described a continuity of autocracy by Nawaz Sharif, had mocked the ‘democratic hardship credentials’ of certain leaders (unnamed) who had bawled their eyes out when faced with harsh treatment at the hands of their khaki tormentors. President Zardari never took any names but everybody knew that he had been referring to Mian Nawaz Sharif & co. So all Nisar wanted was an opening to close the book on Mr. Zardari and when he finally got one because of an impromptu debate on Swat forced by the ailing Syed Allauddin, the opposition leader latched on to it with both hands.

“If a political blow comes from the presidency then we will react accordingly if one man’s ego (direct reference to president Zardari) is allowed to misuse the presidency then we too reserve our right to respond in the same coin”, and he also went on to add in a rather contemptuous tone that PML-N had always warned against the perils of allowing the presidency to become a hub of partisan politics. Simply put, he made it abundantly clear that his party had had enough of the president’s style of politics and if there was ever an open declaration of war, this was it.

But an aside prior to reverting to today’s proceedings; one would have to be politically naÔve to treat this latest blasting of the president as a mere tit-for-tat response by a miffed opposition, as even a cursory look at the developments (or should I say deteriorations) of the past few weeks will reveal a trend of the PML-N making a deliberate distinction of behaviour and intensity while criticizing the president’s person on one hand, and the Gilani led PPP government on the other. Why and for what, is an interesting discussion in itself. Then there is the intriguing timing and tenor of the Saudi intelligence chief’s recent visit to Pakistan. There are quite a few related matters as well which may not seem related at a first glance, such as the coincidental timing of Senate elections and March 9th approaching agitation but fate may tie some interesting knots here and there. Are things really as divorced from one another as they may appear at first glance? But let’s keep all that for some other day.

Nisar’s open declaration of war and the involved serious future ramifications notwithstanding, he did have some very pertinent points to make about the real and present immediate crisis of Swat and other terror plagued parts of the country. He rightly questioned this ongoing practice of “high sounding unanimous resolutions followed by fiery speeches” but then ultimately it all dissolving into nothingness. The leader of the opposition had taken this line as he was already aware of the treasury’s desire to adopt a unanimous resolution condemning the Taliban decree of banning female education in Swat. Interesting enough, this issue had been raised by none other than Ahsan Iqbal of the PML-N last week and at the time PML-N had also indicated its willingness to adopt such a resolution. But that was last week, and a week is a very long time in power politics to force change of hearts and priorities.

Nisar was right on dot when he asked the government to eschew shooting off one high flying resolution after another and to first explain its actions, and non-actions on Swat as the in-camera session had been informed by government that by December 2008, Swat would be firmly under government control and even the army would be pulled out by then. And we all know the reality, which is quite the opposite. As he put it sarcastically, “do they even remember what they say in their briefings?” He echoed the majority sentiment when he expressed his indignation at never ending resolutions, fiery speeches and implored the government to “stop playing this cruel joke and start taking actions. It’s time to act and not resolve”. Tell me whatever happened to that all-important War on Terror resolution, he asked bitterly, and all that was to happen consequently. But we already know the answer to that, don’t we?

Hints at new political alliances

By Muhammad Anis**

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Monday warned President Asif Ali of a tit-for-tat response if the Presidency continued to indulge in politics.

“We reserve the right to give a befitting response if mudslinging on political parties and their leadership continues from the Presidency,” said the senior PML-N leader while speaking on a point of order in the National Assembly and later talking to newsmen at the Parliament House.

Chaudhry Nisar harshly criticised the President House in response to President Asif Ali Zardari’s comments against the opposition during a meeting with the PPP parliamentarians on Saturday. It was the harshest ever attack launched by the opposition reflecting widening gulf between the PPP and the PML-N.

Chaudhry Nisar said the apprehensions of the opposition that a political personality and head of a party should not become the President of Pakistan have come true. “We had suggested that Asif Zardari should instead become the prime minister,” he said.

Nisar also hinted at new political alignments inside and outside parliament as a reaction to the policies and failure to implement the Charter of Democracy and the promises made by the PPP leadership. “We do not regret our association with PPP but I believe that political history would have been different had Benazir Bhutto been alive,” Nisar said while replying to a question.

The leader of the opposition while regretting President Zardari’s comments said that mud-slinging could endanger the democratic process in the country. “It would have been better for President Zardari not to malign the opposition leaders by making personal attacks on the leadership of PML-N,” Chaudhry Nisar said.

The PML-N recalled it was agreed between the leadership of two major political parties in the Charter of Democracy (CoD) that personal attacks would be avoided.

Nisar maintained that the PML-N leadership had never indulged in personal attacks on President Zardari or PPP leadership rather it always concentrated on issues and principles. He criticised President Zardari for saying that the opposition leaders went out of the country after reaching a deal with the dictator and touching his feet. “Every body knows and President Zardari should also remember who touched the feet of dictator and remained in hiding in New York for four years and who struck the notorious deal with dictatorship,” the PML-N leader said.

“Neither we made any deal with the dictator nor did we give safe passage to him,” he said.Nisar wondered whether demanding repeal of the 17th Amendment, independent judiciary and implementation of the Charter of Democracy (CoD) could be considered as personal attacks.

He regretted that President Zardari called journalists the ‘biggest terrorists’. “The contradiction and clarification from the spokesman of the President House came Monday afternoon after the government issued a rebuttal, fearing journalists could stage a walkout during the National Assembly session,” he said.

Nisar said these journalists kept President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani alive in politics when they were in jail but now when the same journalists criticise the government, they are called terrorists.

Nisar also strongly criticised the government for not implementing the resolutions passed unanimously by the National Assembly. “Did the government implement the resolution seeking end to military operation in the tribal areas and Swat, and did the government take practical steps to call the OIC meeting and dispatch relief goods to the people of Palestine?” he asked. He said adopting resolutions alone would not serve the purpose unless practical steps are taken to implement those resolutions.

Count Down for Punjab Government over Long March Issue !

** Zardari, Taseer discuss change in Punjab

Tuesday, January 27, 2009**

Babar Dogar & Asim Yasin

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has hinted to Punjab Governor Salman Taseer significant political developments in Punjab in coming few days, sources close to the Punjab governor told The News here Monday.

They said Zardari informed the governor to start countdown of Punjab government’s days as any major political upheaval was expected in the province within a few days. The sources stated that the president conveyed to the governor that the PPP was still prepared to cooperate with PML-N government in Punjab provided they withheld their media campaign against the PPP government in the Center, their statements against the president and Punjab governor and support to lawyer’s long march.

The governor is learnt to have apprised the president about Punjab government’s act of providing official protocol to the sacked Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and using state machinery and resources in his reception as well as facilitating lawyer’s long march.

The sources stated that Zardari took strong notice of Punjab government’s act of providing official protocol to Justice Iftikhar. They stated Zardari expressed his concern that the provincial government in connivance with handful lawyers and a few sacked judges was making efforts to destabilise their government in the Center.

President Zardari is said to have told Taseer that he wanted coalition government in Punjab to function smoothly but undemocratic attitude of PML-N leaders and their efforts to destabilise government in Islamabad was big hindrance in this way. He further told the governor that the steps of provincial government were damaging the prevailing democratic process.

However, when The News approached a close friend of the governor, he denied that the Taseer was asked by the president to start the countdown for a big upheaval in Punjab. He said no change in the Punjab government was discussed during the meeting between the president and the Punjab governor. He said whatever step would be taken in this regard would be initiated by the federal government and the PPP, and not by the governor.

President Asif Ali Zardari discussed with Governor Punjab Salman Taseer how to improve working relationship with the Punjab government, sources said in Islamabad. The Punjab governor called on the president here Monday and briefed him about socio-political and economic situation of the province.

Sources said the meeting was held in the backdrop of meeting of Punjab Chief Minister and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif with the president a few days back. Sources quoted the president as saying that the PML-N’s mandate in Punjab would be respected, as it was necessary to work together with all democratic forces for strengthening democracy.

During the meeting, the fiery statements against the PPP leadership by some PML-N leaders also come under discussion, and both the leaders expressed their strong reservations on the N League leaders attitude towards working relation between the two parties.

According to sources, both were agreed that in a coalition there must be respect for each party but the PML-N adopted a non-cooperative attitude. It was decided that the president and the Punjab governor will not accept any undemocratic step from any side as strengthening of democratic institutions was the responsibility of all the political parties.

During the meeting, sources said, Governor Taseer apprised President Zardari of ongoing development activities in different parts of the province. Sources said Taseer explained to the president the problems being faced by the PPP ministers in the Punjab coalition government.

Later, Governor Taseer held a separate meeting with Advisor on Interior Rehman Malik and discussed law and order situation in the wake of proposed long march of lawyers besides other issues.
