Zardari open to talks with Taliban

Pakistan’s president has said he is willing to embark on negotiations with the Taliban in his country, despite the group intensifying its campaign of attacks in recent months.
Asif Ali Zardari’s comments came hours after a meeting on Friday with David Cameron, the British prime minister, aimed at ending a diplomatic row over whether Pakistan was doing enough to combat terrorism.
"We never closed the dialogue,‘’ Zardari said. "We had an agreement, which they broke. Talks will resume whenever they feel we’re strong enough and they can’t win, because they won’t win.‘’
Last year Pakistan struck a deal with the Taliban in the Swat Valley giving them de facto control over the region, but the agreement broke down when the fighters moved into other parts of Pakistan.
Zardari’s comments are likely to raise eyebrows amongst Pakistan’s western allies, who have been encouraging the country to fight the Taliban, not talk to them.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, PJ Mir, a political analyst, said: "I feel this is going to bring in a lot of criticism.
"People are losing lives on an everyday basis in Pakistan and, of course, on the borders.
“So to talk and sit down with them [the Taliban], and again, give them time to regroup, and again, bring their mindset, it’s going to be a very difficult task.”
Diplomatic spat
Pakistan’s approach to dealing with armed groups was thrust into the spotlight last week after Cameron ignited a spat between the two countries by accusing Islamabad of “exporting terror” and looking “both ways” in the battle against the Taliban.

Zardari hit back at the allegations of double-dealing, arguing that Pakistanis are often victims of attacks on their own soil and insisting that Islamabad is committed to fighting armed groups in the region.
The prime minister’s remarks prompted the Pakistani government to summon Britain’s ambassador to Islamabad earlier this week for a dressing down.
Pakistan intelligence chiefs cancelled a trip to the UK in retalitation for the comments and Zardari also came under pressure to abandon his trip over the controversy.
Despite standing by his words, Cameron has accepted that Pakistanis are often the victims of attacks, including the one that killed Zardari’s late wife Benazir Bhutto, the former premier assassinated in Pakistan in 2007.
‘Stand together’
The two leaders agreed to put the dispute behind them during Friday’s meeting, with Zardari insisting that the two countries will “stand together” in the face of difficulties.
Mir said: "I think that what president Zardari has done is defuse a very, very tense situation.
“When he goes back I’m sure he will be directing his intelligence chiefs and others to resume the meeting that was cancelled.”

Alan Fisher, Al Jazeera’s correspondent outside the meeting venue, said both sides needed to get past the dispute to “frame the ongoing relationship” between the two countries.
“Both sides realise that they need to cool the temperature … because there has been a war of words over the last week or so.”
The Pakistani Taliban, which is loosely based in the tribal regions close to the
Afghan border, was allegedly involved in the failed Times Square car bombing in New York and a suicide attack on a CIA base in December in Afghanistan that killed seven CIA employees.

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

Jeez, dont you guys have enough?

jahan daekho zardari..

It looks like whatever happened to MJ is happening to Zardari now..

Whats next…child abuse? :@:

Sorry, I am anti politics and defiantely hate zardari but…people voted for him knowing his nature

I cant blame either of em…neither the people nor the Zardari.

But ya I know onething for sure that, the day he comes off the chair is going to be his last day in this world.

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

^^ people voted for PPP (under the favoritism of the death of Bibi) and they voted for the Prime Minister and not for President!!

About last day in this world... we cant say that as mostly a plane to foreign country is ready on that day. ;)

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

^He wont even get to the plane...unless his own bought people are protecting him..

It is what they are good at..Protect one party member so he can run away and than make plans to come back later.

People will say that when he comes back, they will cut him in to pieces for his doings.
When he comes back...nothing happens.

Typical Pakistani people. If only they learn to pick one person who doesnt support punjabiz, doesnt support MQM, doesnt support sindhiz, balochiz and so on and on and on..

Just one person who doesnt think about himself but he thinks for everyone else and to make Pakistan a better place.

Than Pakistan would've been a better place. :)

Mai to yehi kahunga ke yeh Pakistani Awam ka kasuur hay.

Aor yehi log iss ko utaar bhi saktay hain but they wont.

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

People without power cant do anything.. and those who have power they dont want to do anything. If they did, they will lose their power and their income.

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

^actually its just the income they would worry about, they wont give a damn about power or status.

because if they did. They would've done something right for Pakistan by now.

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

now a days power is with money.. havent u seen that why corruption is high in Pakistan and why only corrupted people get elected?

Yus I have....and not just corrupted people man.

Its uneducated, baap dada ki jageer per raj kernay walay, corrupted mind F**BARD, vote buyers and sold out to US with back ground of nothing solid to prove that they can rule or atleast manage a part of a country.

Forget the country.

And they also have a back plan on after giving hope to people and sugar coat them, they will eventually back stab and run towards UK.

Actually I dont get why people still march around saying Altaaf Hussain is their co-founder of Pakistan (which is soo not true in General) where he sits in UK or USA GOD knows where, and using them according to his needs.

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

^^ he isnt co founder of Pakistan :D I dont know why they didnt want to believe in his speech saying division of sub-continent was "wrong" :D which co-founder was he? LOL

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

I was in some MQM event (dont ask how...and why) I heared that guy clearly saying.

"aik they humaray Babaye Quom Mohammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan, aor aik aor hain humharay founder of Pakistan, Altaaf Husain"

On with..."JIYEEE MAHAJIR"

Later on I beat the guy who convinced me to go with him to that event...

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

^^ HAHAHAHA

Shukar karo unnoon ney Babaye Quam ko mention kiya. MQM teaches its students as to how Altaf Kaaliya is a better founder than the Qauid, better poet than Iqbal, better cricketer (and better looking) than Imran Khan, oh I can go on and on....

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

And this co-founder of Pakistan, kouley ka kaan, altaf hussain also burnt the Pakistani flag, and openly denounced the creation of Pakistan as the biggest blunder in the history of mankind.

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

unacceptable!

there should be no talks with people who attack the state and don't recognize its authority. the only choice these animals should be given is to surrender their weapons and submit before the courts of the country to face the consequences of their criminal acts. and none of this shariat court bullsiht.

as a Pakistani, a "peace" accord a la Swat is not acceptable to me. that was not a peace accord - that was surrender. we left the people of Swat at the mercy of these animals AND we abandoned Swat. how could we abandon an integral and gorgeous part of the country to these jaahil moulvis?

I do not want my country to surrender any part of it - no matter how tiny - to the barbarity and dictatorship of these bearded animals. that is no peace accord. that is the state surrendering before these jaahil murderous moulvis. Pakistan cannot and must not talk peace with them. the only way forward is for these criminals to surrender and take their due punishment.

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

samb, obama, karzai and everyone else have realized this too. Its an entire population, and short of carrying out a genocide, they cant be eliminated. This war can go on forever, and bear in mind what will happen if they end up beating 3 superpowers in a short span, the next country they'll go after would be Pakistan!

p.s. pakistan, and the situation in swat etc is different, the TTP isnt Afghani Taliban. They are just a bunch of local renegade goons armed by some foreign powers (the same ppl arming the baluchi separatists).

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

Agree with Mr spock 100%

Zardari is talking about peace talks with the terrorists in Pakistan - he isn't talking about Afghan Taliban who I couldn't care less about.

but as far as the terrorists in Pakistan such as TTP, etc are concerned, as a Pakistani I find it unacceptable to negotiate with these animals. they need to be arrested and tried for their crimes. the state must not surrender or negotiate with them.

Mullah ‘patakhey’ Khan…a rare breed

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

^ BUT....This is also how extremists are recruited
They are told they will be saving Pakistan and they end up serving a group

Re: Zardari open to talks with Taliban

story told by a friend that was asked to tutor some young students in Karachi......

".....when I asked the little guy to open up his notebook and write something the first thing he did was write "Jeeay Muhajir" at the top of the page and then went on to write the assignment.......seeing this I reviewed all his notebooks and found the same written at the top of each page.....similar to how some people write "Bismillah"......."
