Zakat

I got married and got gold from relatives.. mom.. khalas etc.. My issue is, how do i find out how much it weighs in order to give zakat. Of course I can’t ask the person plus lets say I even ask them, most of them don’t know because traditionally in my family, gold is passed on to daughters, nieces. Is there a way to weigh gold for zakat purposes. A lot of gold I got has stones in it too, so correctly weighing is an issue for me. How do you guys living in the west find out gold’s worth??

Re: Zakat

Good question. One thing you can do is to take it to a jeweler. What we did is we used a kitchen scale to weigh all my wife's jewlery and just by looking at it, eye ball the percentage of gold in in. Knowing that it will have some error, after we got the total wight, we added 15% from our side to cover for any error. I know that its not a fool proof method but allah knows the niyat.

Re: Zakat

Take it to your local jeweller ... or buy a set of scales ... type apothecary or jewellers scales in ebay and hey presto ...

Peace

Re: Zakat

Yeah that's what I was thinking initially. Take it to a jewler because there is no way I can estimate with the stones. Stones have weight that is not counted towards zakat. Sets that my husband gave me, he saved the receipts for them so those weren't an issue.
