Zakat on cash

Salam,

I want to ask if there is zakat on cash or not & if there is then how to calculate it? One should have cash amount of equal or more then 7.5 tola gold to pay zakat on that… right?

Lets say I have savings which i want to use in future at desperate times & thats my only financial security at bad times then? Do I still have to pay zakat for that?

& what about haq mehar,do one have to pay zakat on that? Huq mehar is given to the girl as financial security for future but lets say if she pays zakat on cash huq mehar then at one point there will be no cash left with her to use in hard times as she paid a small chunk of it every year as zakat.

Re: Zakat on cash

Wa alaikum salaam…

yes if you have cash equal to 6.5 tola gold or have gold, then you have to pay 2.5% zakat… let suppose 1 tola gold rate is 50000, then 2.5% of 6.5 tola is 8125 PKR…

and if you have money more than that, suppose you’ve 1 million, then zakat will be due on 1 million that will be 25000 PKR…

Haq mehr… yes if that money exceeds 6.5 tola gold or equal, then you have to pay, and ALLAH na kare that you ever have to face any problem, but if anyhow something happens then your money will never decrease than 6.499 tola gold…

Re: Zakat on cash

Is there any ruling that you have to pay zakat only on this particular amount which is untouched like never used for 1 year?Like say 50,000 is just sitting there in an account & was never used so I will pay zakat on just 50k. But lets say previous ramzaan to next ramzaan there are 20k more in there I added then in that ramzaan I will pay zakat for 70k right?

Re: Zakat on cash

good question…

jee there are rulings… and that is you have to pay zakat only on the amount/gold which you posses for full islamic year

so, dont worry about added 20k until you know its a profit…

Re: Zakat on cash

But lets say I dont know how much amount I possessed for 1 Islamic year ..then?

Profit as in?

Re: Zakat on cash

What I don’t understand is how come there is zakat on girls “huq” ?

Are you sure there is zakat on huq even if its huq mehar or any other huq in cash?

Re: Zakat on cash

dont know anything that how much amount you added last time ? like suppose you have 10000 and you added 1200 or around 1000-1500, then it will be around 8800 etc… but in case you dont remember anything then it is better to pay zakat for whole amount to make it clean…

Profit, like your money is increasing by some sort of income… like rent, investment etc.. then you’ll have to pay for the whole amount…

Re: Zakat on cash

your jewelry is your haq too.. nahi? haq-mehar is yours.. so yes you have to pay as long as it’s amount equals 6.5 tola gold…

so your actual question is why a girl is forced to pay zakat on girl’s haq/money/gold etc… let suppose there is a couple, and hubby is a billionaire, he buy her wife gold and diamonds, and gave her millions of rupees… does it means he is less richer now and have to pay less zakat ? no, the amount/worth is same and now both have to contribute to pay zakat…

let’s have an other example, there is a billionaire, he dies and wife gets 1/8th of his assets… wife still got billions on the name of haq, so does this haq makes her free of paying zakat ? no, nothing is mubarrah/free… it could mean that she still enjoys life on her haq that is left by her hubby, and other muslim sisters starve to death… there is a perfect equilibrium in Islam..

however, ALLAH dont like to be in debt, HE will multiply your amount inshaALLAH that you pay for charity/endowment… just trust and love HIM…

I hope you got the answer, if still have any doubts say it..

Re: Zakat on cash

To know the amounts to pay, I would suggest consulting an aalim on it. Though from what you mentioned, if you happen to have nisab at the time your zakaat is due, your savings and your meher are both zakatable.

Re: Zakat on cash

Ok but lets say no amount is coming to the cash savings you have as you want to keep it for desperate times so if I keep on paying zakat on that then it will finish off? Then what will that girl do in desperate times? She needs financial security :frowning:

Re: Zakat on cash

Here is what I found on the Islamicity Website, seems there are ruling for both (have to pay Zakat on Jewelry worn, also don’t have to pay on Jwelry worn), but most interesting is there is No Zakat on Diamonds and precious stones

Fiqh As-Sunnah, 041 : 3.016A : Zakah on Jewellery.
Scholars agree that no zakah has to be paid on diamonds, pearls, sapphires, rubies, corals, chrysolite, or any kind of precious stones unless they are used for trade.(Same is true for the Plots: Editor). There is, however, disagreement over whether women’s gold or silver jewellery is exempt. Abu Hanifah and Ibn Hazm hold that zakah is compulsory on gold and silver jewellery provided they constitute a nisab. Their view is based on the report of 'Amr ibn Shu’aib from his father from his grandfather: “Two women with gold bracelets on their wrists came to the Prophet, upon whom be peace. The Prophet said: ‘Do you want Allah to make you wear bracelets of fire on the Day of Judgment?’ They answered: ‘No.’ He said: ‘Then pay the zakah which is due on what you wear on your wrists.’”

In the same way, Asma’ bint Yazid reported: “My aunt and I, while wearing gold bracelets, went to the Prophet, upon whom be peace. He asked: ‘Did you pay their zakah?’ She related that they had not. The Prophet said: ‘Do you not fear that Allah will make you wear a bracelet of fire? Pay its zakah.’” Al-Haythami confirms that it was narrated by Ahmad, and its chain is good.

'Aishah narrated: “The Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, came to me and saw me wearing silver rings. Thereupon, he asked: 'What is this, ‘Aishah?’ I replied: ‘I made them to adorn myself for you, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘Did you pay their zakah?’ I said: ‘No, or what Allah wishes.’ Then he said: ‘Their punishment in Hell is enough for you.’” This is related by Abu Dawud, ad-Daraqutni, and al-Baihaqi.

Malik, ash-Shaf’i, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal hold that there is no zakah on women’s jewellery regardless of its value. Al-Baihaqi relates that Jabir ibn 'Abdullah was once asked if jewellery was subject to zakah. He replied that it was not, even if its value exceeded one thousand dinars.

Al-Baihaqi also narrates the case of Asma’: “Asma’ bint Abu Bakr used to adorn her daughters with gold. Although its value was around fifty thousand dinars, she did not pay zakah on it.”

It is related in al-Muwatta’ from 'Abdurrahman ibn al-Qasim from his father that ‘Aishah used to take care of her nieces, who were orphans under her protection, and adorned them with jewellery without paying its zakah. Also in al-Muwatta’ it is related that 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar used to adorn his daughters and slave girls with gold without paying zakah.

Summing up the subject, al-Khattabi concludes: “What appears in the Qur’an supports the view of those who hold that zakah is obligatory on gold and silver, and the traditions also support this. Those who did not consider it obligatory based their view on speculation and some of the traditions. However, to be on the safe side, it is better to pay.” These different views deal with allowable gold or silver adornment. As for other adornments which are prohibited - that is, a woman wearing a man’s adornment - their zakah should be paid. The same rule is applied to gold or silver utensils.

When one adds all Zakatable assets as one amount, one must see how much he/she owes to other people, and then subtract this amount from the total. Zakat will be paid from whatever remains after subtraction, if it reaches the value of Nisab (Zakat payable amount), at the rate of 2.5 %.
( See: Radd al-Muhtar 2/260, al-Hidaya 1/186 & others.)

In response to your question, professor `Ali Muhi-Deen Al-Qurrah Daghi, head of department of Islamic Jurisprudence, Qatar university, says:

"First, the minimum amount of gold on which Zakah is due is 20 Mithqals. A Mithqal is equal to 4.25 g. Hence, the Zakah-payable amount of gold is 85 g. of pure gold. Thus, whoever possesses such an amount of gold, i.e., 85 g, has to pay Zakah that amounts to 2.5% of the total value of the gold provided that one lunar year has passed.

To know how to pay Zakah on gold, one has to know the market value of gold for sale. One has to pay 2.5% of its value provided that the gold amounts to the aforementioned minimum nisab (prescribed amount)."

Re: Zakat on cash

If you have nisaab, zakat is an obligation on you. It is just 2.5% per year, so I wouldn’t worry about it running out. Plus by paying zakaat on it, it will be purified and protected for you.

Re: Zakat on cash

Another question related to zakat, do I have to tell that person that this is zakat? Because there is mixed opinion too, some say you have to mention that its zakat while others say don’t mention just give it as a gift.
