Zakat & Edhi

I heard from a scholar that we should not send our Zakat and Fitra money to Eidhi

He said that In Eidhi foundation, they have no way of channeling funds so let us say, Zakat would only go to Muslims. It could be spend on person of any religion

I want your opinion on that

Please keep in mind that I am not starting a controversial thread, here.

Muslims should help non-Muslims, but Zakat is an Ibadaat, where the money is specifically reserved for Non-Sayed poor Muslims, one need to know where the money is going, otherwise his/her Zakat can become invalid

Edhi is great organization and we should send donations. We Muslims should be generous enough to open our wallets out side the obligations of Zakat and Fitra, too, and that money should go to Edhi

Re: Zakat & Edhi

if a group says they can hande zakat if it is marked especially as zakat then they should ahve a way to do what they do.

as far as zakat not going to non muslims, I dont know about that. here is a good site with some info on that.

Question #2: Who is qualified to receive Zakah?

The Quran describes eight categories of people who are to receive Zakah in Surah 9, verse 60. “As-Sadaqat (here it means Zakat) are only for the Fuqara and Al-Masakin and those employed to collect the (funds); and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allah’s Cause, and for the wayfarer; a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.”

Ahmad Sakr elaborated on these categories:

  1. The poor (Fuqara)-this refers to someone who has no income
  2. The needy (Masakin)-this is someone who for instance, may have a job, a house and a car, but their income is below the minimum requirement.
  3. Employees of the Zakah. This category is sub-divided into the following:

a. the group of people who are social services workers who go into the community to evaluate who is Faqeer and Miskeen.
b. those who collect the Zakah money
c. the accountant of the Zakah money
d. investors who increase the share of the Zakah
e. the clerical worker or secretary who puts the files in order
f. those who will deliver Zakah to the ones who need it
g. the outside auditor.

  1. Sympathizers
These are those people who might enter or who have already entered Islam. Anyone we feel are good friends or ours (non-Muslim or new Muslims) we give them a gift from the Zakah money.

  2. To free slaves

Riqab is the term used to describe the group of people who are slaves. The Zakah money is used to free the slaves. Sakr stresses that Islam did not invent slavery, but it gradually abolished it.

  1. For the Gharimeen-those who are in debt

-Zakah money is used to pay off debts but these people are not living in luxury, they are living a normal life. For example, someone who has gone bankrupt because of job loss and is overloaded with debt.

  1. Fee Sabeelillah (for the Cause of Allah)

This can be anything for the love of Allah. Sakr gave the following examples:

a. for the employment of a Daiyah, Imam, or religious teachers to do Dawa
b. building Islamic schools
c. building Muslim clinics and hospitals
d. providing money to young men who want to marry but cannot afford Mahr
e. to assist poor travelers
f. to establish water springs on streets for those walking or travelers
(please note, these last three things were done by Khalifa Umar ibn Abdul Aziz)
g. to defend Muslims who are under attack
h. For television, radio or newspaper project aimed at doing Dawa
i. to help someone publish a book for Dawa
j. to pay for the studies of a student..

  1. Ibn as Sabeel

This refers to a traveler, for instance who has lost his wallet and has to get back to his home.

Sakr stresses that this has to be verified to see if this person is really telling the truth, since there has been at least one case of a man claiming to be a lost traveler in North America who has stolen thousands from Muslims claiming to be a traveler of this type.

Re: Zakat & Edhi

desai sahab of course have a different view.

http://www.islam.tc/ask-imam/view.php?q=14835

Zakat is given only to Muslims. It cannot be given to non-Muslims. Other forms of charity e.g. Lillah may be given to non-Muslims. It is also an act of virtue and reward to assist non-Muslims.

And Allah Knows Best

Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Re: Zakat & Edhi

Edhi never claimed that.

I would rather go with Mufti Desai than Soundvision.

Re: Zakat & Edhi

I have no problem giving charity to the needy in order to BRING FORTH THE ZAKAAT (aatuz zakaah), and hence being ZAKKEE. Edhi is doing service to humanity and that is his worship. May The God reward him for his actions and vision.

Re: Zakat & Edhi

He did.. on numerous occassions..

he explained how zakat funds are used and that you can send funds labelled as zakat.

Here is one instance where he mentioned it. after the oct 2005 earthquake edhi centers asked ppl to note of this was zakat as well.

http://www.contactpakistan.com/socialwork/Edhi/interview.htm

*Q.23 What are the different Heads for payment and donating at Edhi Centers?

A.23 There are different heads of accounts and the expenditure is done accordingly. The details are as follows:

Free ambulance service is provided for transporting unclaimed bodies and for victims of accidents, emergencies, riots etc. Expenses for this are met from funds received as zakat, sadqat. If you want you can deposit money under these heads at any Edhi Welfare Center*

edhi gets 16% of all zakat proceedings in Pakistan, they probably know what they need to do with zakat funds. Unless we think edhi would not use them right, due to lack of knowledge or lack of principles. (page 21) www.adb.org/Documents/Books/Investing_In_Ourselves/PAK/part_one.pdf

kahan ja rahay ho mufti sahab kay saath?
either way, u pick the statemenst that make sense to you.
Edhi does seem to be doing a good job, so why not help them?

Re: Zakat & Edhi

If EDHI said that that that is OK with me, I can send my Zakat to him

Even if he did not say that, I agree with the second statement of yours. He is doing a good job, but why are we so stingy that we cant think of donating money outside Zakat. We can always give EDHI, that money

Re: Zakat & Edhi

we can and should send sadqa there as well.
This thread was specifically about zakat so my answer was keeping that constraint in play.
