hi all,
i’m not sure if this question has been asked before and i also know that we all should have paid our zakaat already, but i honestly didn’t have time during Ramadan to pay it.
and now i have a question:
can we give the zakaat money to a non-muslim? if not? then why not?
u c there is a woman at work, who was pregnant with triplets, she lost one baby in utero, second one died soon after birth and third one is in the Neonatal ICU. she herself is in the hospital and can’t make it work. so i was thinking i would give my zakaat money to her, cuz she’s in need of money. but i’m unsure if it can be given to a non-muslim.

Zakat does not have to be in Ramadan. You can pick any time of the year for the calculation, but you should keep that date (week or month) fixed for your calculation purposes, just as companies do for their fiscal years (quarter or half too).

Its a RECOMMENDATION that you give to people closest to you first (relatives), if you don't find one then give it to other need Muslims. I don't recall any prohibition from God or Prophet PBUH for paying zakat to non-Muslim.

I don't know what kind of workplace it is, but many workplaces offer employees "disability" benefits. I think if she is unable to work then her disability (short term first then long term) benefits would kick in. You can check with her if she needs help then go ahead... in my opinion.
