so zaheer abbas has become the first casualty of the unsuccessful tour of england. he has been removed from his job as the manager–and rightfully so. from a personal perspective, I do not think he was fulfilling the duties of a team manager. what was he managing anyway??
though a replacement has been made, do we really need a manager???
...Are you sure? Shaharyar is saying it is because of something else...by the way is TALAT ALI a professional manager or another "has been" that our board will try to provide OJT (on the job training) towards management at the cost of our team?
the article reads...
But Shaharyar denied that the move meant Abbas was the first victim of 'Hairgate'. "He has not been replaced because of what happened at the Oval. We need him as a witness for the ICC hearings later in September. After that, if the need for an appeal rises, then we might need him further so that might interfere with his role as manager. This is not a criticism or indictment of his role. It is no reflection on him."
as for talat, someone close to the PCB had to be rewarded. I mean lets face it, we are a nation with a lot of nepotism and sycophancy; it like runs in the national fabric.
so Talat's appointment is because of that.
Managers role is to look after the team, resolve their problems, be a PR man for them etc. etc. What was Zaheer doing right at the peak of the hair crisis, sitting talking to someone on his mobile right in the glare of all the media. Hmmmmmmmm great manager.
Zaheer may be called the Asian Bradman for his batting abilities, but at a crucial time during this series, he completely failed the team as manager.
On that critical fourth day at Oval, it should be Zaheer Abbas who is explaining the team position to the media and not the chairman of the board. Thats why we have a Manager with the team i.e. to talk to media. Although an argument can be made that with the presence of Shahriyar (the ultimate top dog at PCB - no offence), Zaheer couldn't possibly force himself to take the media spotlight, but thats exactly what a sensible and resourceful manager should do. Shahriyar had no clue about cricketing matters and made Pakistan's position appear even more foolish after his comments that the ball was de-shaped due to sixes being hit.
And that brings us to Zaheer's own actions during that challenging time. While the team is deliberating inside the dressing room, umpires are on the ground, the whole world is watching the door of Pakistan dressing room, what do we see. Zaheer Abbas emerges from the dressing room, dials a number on his mobile and starts yapping to someone. With the entire PCB, ECB and ICC top brass supposedly already on the ground, who the heck was Zaheer talking on the phone at that critical time. Not only that, shouldn't it be the Manager and the Coach who are well-versed in cricketing laws and rules to at least inform the team captain what are the rules about forfeiture etc. It seems all were clueless, and when Hair had removed the bails (after his second futile trip to the middle), then suddenly the Pakistan team is ready to play. For love of God, are you guys crazy? Either take a position and stick to it, or learn the laws of the game. The whole dilly-dallying was more frustrating than anything else.
Not to mention that Zaheer's own speaking skills betray the fact that he had spent many a summer in England. Stammering, lack of even one cohesive and proper english sentence and complete lack of anything worthwhile to say in the first place, makes him a very awkward person to listen to.
I think the only good thing during this trip that puts some positive light on the role of the Manager, was that there was a relatively positive relationship between the two teams (compared to some of the previous tours). Although with Faisal Iqbal-Pietersen chak chak going on this may be an arguable compliment as well.
manager should be somebody whos well-educated,intelligent and well-spoken.zaheer abbass unfortunately lacks all those qualities thats why Sharyaar Khan had to step in and take the role of a manager in the difficult circumstances.
^^ so we will still be lacking one such as that..right...why can't the academy send an ex cricketer who is young enough to get trained on this stuff and then appoint him to the job...
I guess the balance of understanding cricket and knowing how to manage a sports team is what is required... not either or of the two. They should pick a keen player who is retired but has reasonable educational background and send to a year long managment training program. I am sure the americas (US and CAN) have tons of such progrmas due to all the media attention sports teams get over here and make that person the manager. ...and then I wake up from my dream...nice one to have ...
I was not able to understand, why Zaheer was with our team. Kher hope he enjoyed his trip. Now bring back Intekhab Aalim.
We also need to improve our fielding. We lost 2 tests due to poor fielding( many players agree to that) as if we had sufficient bowling options available. I favor Ijaz Ahmed as fielding coach.
^^$@[EMAIL="$@##00#@$"]##00*#@$.....~~##~~*
(in English)
instant hiring/firing of managers ====> one day there will be no other option but Intekhab Aalim
we need a fielding coach, almost 6 players told Geo news that Pak lost cause of fielding and Ijaz was the best fielder on our side (you doubt it, place a bet with Ijaz). Otherwise bring some outsider to improve fielding.
The biggest head to be rolled and the most justified at that, should have been Shirltess Khan's...cause he was the senior most official of the PCB present at the ground and right in the mix of the controversy, giving interviews to Holding et al...
Off course that didn't happen and poor Zaheer, who even though quintessentially incompetent and acquiescent Pakistani official was made the escape goat...
Is Talant going to be any better or what other possible canidates could have been given the job? Maybe there will be a another manager for the world cup.........
