A thought occurred to me, OP. It may be that your friends really truly don’t know what caste they belong to. However, it could also be that since the caste system carries greater social consequences/stigma in India, some people could feel uncomfortable with disclosing their caste. So, either they honestly don’t know or they’re concealing it. Just a guess.
