Cat Stevens was one of the biggest solo artists of the 1960s and 1970s penning such songs as Matthew & Son, Moonshadow, Wild World and Father and Son (covered by Boyzone and many others) and selling millions of LPs. Following a bout of TB early in his career he undertook an ongoing search for peace and ultimate spiritual truth. He embraced Islam in 1977 and changed his name to Yusuf Islam.

This year Yusuf Islam has been nominated for the World Social Award for his humanitarian relief work helping children. Previous recipients of a World Awards honour include Pope John Paul II, Steven Spielberg, and Luciano Pavarotti.

Fabulous event, and for such a worthy cause as well. Sounds awesome. Wish i were attending it. :(

Other performers also include Zain Bhikha who has one of the most amazing voices i have ever heard - has anyone heard his "I remember your smile"? Sounds like it will be a great event Insha'Allah....

If anyone hear attends this, please let us know & share your thoughts in this thread.

I bet Prince Naseem will be great also, he's boxed before at the Royal Albert Hall so it'll be interesting to see him out of the ring speaking for a change.

Sorry, not sure.

I’m a big fan of Cat Stevens :k:

Have any of you seen the Behind the Music VH1 Special on Cat Stevens? It is very enlightening on his journey to Islam.

Fret, did you hear the recent Hope album which came out in April? He re-worked his 1971 hit ‘Peace Train’ (which he first wrote against Vietnam War?) for it. Paul McCartney and David Bowie also contributed songs for the album. Proceeds from the sale of the Hope album went to help Iraqi children affected by war.

You can hear all the tracks here http://www.hope-cd.com

There’s a news item about Yusuf Islam’s involvement here

ahem :o My idea for my custom title (Ngise'Khaya) comes from Yusuf Islam's song... the words come in somewhere in the song. Means "take me home".

Anyways those are great links. Thanks.

Yes, I’ve heard the remake, it’s quite different, but I prefer the original.

That was a pretty good special. There are many great recent interviews from radio shows with Yusuf Islam on the following website.

I really liked his BBC “A Musical Journey” interview:

Fret, also for equally recent information you should check out the almost-daily updates in the News In Brief section of his official site at

The 21st July entry is a particularly nice read

I love brother Yusuf Islam, but cant stand Naz. He was schooled by Barerra and now chickens out of matches with Morrales, Tapia, Corrales and Barerra (2).

Sheryl Crow is about to release a cover version of his song The First Cut Is The Deepest. Rod Stewart also covered the same song a few years ago. In fact, i think it was a bigger hit for him that it was for Cat Stevens??

thats not fair :(
why doesnt he come to aus to perform...
we just had 'Raihan' here on saturday,, wish yusuf islam could come here somtime..
lucky londoners!!!

Shaykh Hamza Yusuf's going to attend!! Just been added:

"The proceedings will be punctuated by special guest appearances, including Shaykh HAMZA YUSUF and Prince Naseem Hamed, and brief speeches by Yusuf Islam and others."

^ why :( oh why...
lucky yous...

I loved the song Wild World from his Cat Stevens days. :k:
