Not true at all. Just because we are friends does not mean we share the same enemies or even the same views on different things.
But from a Art of war point of view its very true.

Theoretically it’s true… in practice it is anything but.
Basically there is another simmilar quote that… “An ememies enemy is my friend”
However humare wattan kee tareeq humko patateeh hain ke ye baath galaat ho saktee hain.
the British came as traders rememeber… to help fight off the Dutch and Portugese who landed before them. Indians let them in and then watched the British wipe out the French and then guess who took over… yes the very helpfull British swallowed up all Hindustan… and yes they started out as friends too.

OK my views;
I strongly believe all of us should base our opinion of everyone based on how they appear to us, and how we judge them not based on what anybody else says about them. However that does not mean you should be ok with someone as long as they r ok with you, i don't agree with that kind of mindset. I think even if someone is perfect ok with us but is being unfair with somebody else, whether be it yr common friend or not, you should stand for the right. Hence, if i ever had an enemy that would mean he/she must have done my wrong severly and i wouldnt definately not like a close one being friendly with them. So for me, this quote does make sense though i would not necessairly want my friend to cut all ties with them but they possibly can't have a very good relationship with someone who is my enemy. That wouldn't really make sense.
Anyway, here's another one to ponder upon;
