Re: your silliest mistake while cooking..
Queenie, I was tipping the dish out of the pot into a little container and thought i will clean the pot with a lukma of naan … thats when i literally jumped out of shock … initially i thought the salt didnt get mixed into the rest of the salan and i forgot to stir thats why its so salty at the bottom of the pan .. but when i tasted the rest of the dish … I cursed myself and then when i started thinking back … I realized I have put salt in there more then twice …
and when i realised few minutes later that one of the otehr dishes has no salt in it , I knew immediately that the salt for that handi had also gone into the salty one ![]()

Re: your silliest mistake while cooking..
When I was like 15, I loved practising reading urdu. My mum had these urdu recipe books. So one day I decided to follow a recipe in it and told my mum not to enter the kitchen! In the list of ingredients it said oil, and on the next line it said ‘2 chai ke chamchay’. I just put some oil and then presumed ‘chai ke chamchay’ meant ‘chai’. So I put two teaspoons of loose tea leaf in the mixture with all its black bits and mixed it in really well. Of course I was only meant to put two teaspoons of oil!!!
Ofcourse the mixture looked really dodgy, so I asked mum what did I do wrong? She said what are those black bits? I said, well the recipe said 2 teaspoons of ‘chai’! Mum gathered the whole family in the kitchen with her laughter after that…![]()
I’m still teased by my family because of that blunder!![]()
Re: your silliest mistake while cooking..
I for so long couldn’t tell when the masala of any salaan was bhunofied. Due to my dad being diabetic and a heart patient we used very less oil. So mum was making masala for some sabzi (don’t remember now) and she was also running late for work so she asked me to just make sure to add the sabzi to the masala once it is all well bhunofied. I asked ok how would I know she said you’d see oil separating from the mixture.
I kept stirring and bhuning the entire masala for a good 10 mins on medium heat until it had turned to a very very dark brown (almost black :p) and although it was soo obvious that it was well bhunofied but I couldn’t see proper layer of oil separated so I kept going on. 20 minutes later mom comes and smells something and says OMG you burnt the masala ![]()
Me: BUT i see no oil ![]()
and she looks at my face and looks at the masala and ends up laughing ! my maid was also
ing at me … and I got pissed so I marched out ..only to realise how stupid I have been and I came back and offered to cut all the onions and tomatoes and help my mom but she didnt let me bhun the masala again ![]()

Re: your silliest mistake while cooking..
When I was a newly wed in my own home with hubby I did this too, I was making curry and somehow missed the besan and was thinking how the curry looked rather different hehehehehe
Another time I was making gosht bhuna huwa and placed everything into the pressure cooker and was clearing up while it whistled and was so pleased with myself as todays cooking seemed effortless, I soon realised I hadn’t added any onions lol
If I had then of course it would have been effort what with the crying eyes, peeling and chopping.

Oh this is the BEST one so far ![]()
I know I have left my chai pateeli on the stove and forgotten about it many times until I smell something burning. One time the fire alarm went off before I realized what the heck was going on!
One time hubbs had made tea and brought it to the hospital after I had given birth to our daughter. We still don’t know how he managed to put salt in that tea rather than sugar but boy that was one nasty tea!! lol

Re: your silliest mistake while cooking..
i forgot the ginger garlic paste in a chicken salan i was making, and thought i could just dump it in in the last 10 mins of cooking. all i could taste was raw ginger and garlic and i kept pulling the ginger strings from the salan. i ended up having to throw it all away when no one was looking :(
