Aap kahan se Kahn ho gaye. You wannabe german…

Says the person whose name starts with Le.

Haha. I am a Khan and the surname attracts a lot of attention, especially amongst Indians who associate it with the top Khans in bollywood.
In fact just yesterday, a new friend saved my name on her phone and insisted saving my last name as well as it was “special”. Lol.

My dada and par dada were Pathans but honestly, my dad’s generation onwards, every ones is less Pathan due to migration and more towards Urdu speaking Indian side… If that makes sense. I don’t feel a sense of belonging towards KpK or any Pathan tribe at all lol. But yeah I guess I am a Pathan! :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a few Khan friends but only one knows Pashtu as he is from Peshawar. The rest all speak Urdu and have no clue abt their Pathan roots. So well, no one ever asked me aap kahan se Khan hogayin!

Re: your last name is Khan, really?

very interesting…mere saath ikdam ulTaa hai…people look at me and ask me if i am a Khan [PaThan] and when i reply in negative, they do NOT believe me and say, “jhooTe, u r a Khan…u r hiding from us!” lol

btw, i don’t have Khan as my last name!

Re: your last name is Khan, really?

I thought we did own the name khan. For me khan=Pathan :konfused:

^ But that is the point of this thread. Khan us a universal last name and nothing to do with pashtun in particular

Re: your last name is Khan, really?

So in schools in NWFP, how common is it for the whole class to be named Khan?

I wonder the same about schools in Indian Punjab. Is everyone named Singh or Kaur there?

Re: your last name is Khan, really?

My last name is not Khan but me, a Syed Shirazi Pehersiri, is mistaken to be Khan by Khans. “ham samjha thum yahan Swat mein apne doston ko ghumaane laya he”.

But really, the word ‘Khan’ is not associated with Pashtuns necessarily. Baloch and some Turks also call themselves Khan.
Amusing thing is that the real descendants of the original Khans, the Hazara of Afghanistan, do not use this surname.

Re: your last name is Khan, really?

My last name is a common first name.. Doesn’t bother me either..

Re: your last name is Khan, really?

What about Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or Liaqat Ali Khan?

In addition to being a last name, it could also have been a title awarded by Mughals, Nizams or British for services to public.
