Re: Your Greatest World Cup Playing 11 Ever
Given that WC is being held on Aus pitches, here is my 11. It will change if WC is happening in Sub-Continent
7 solid, aggressive batsmen (Tendulkar, Gilchrist, Ponting, Viv, Lara, Kallis, Waugh)
1 half batsman (Wasim Akram)
6 proper bowlers (Wasim, Warne, Roberts, Holding, Kallis, Waugh)
1 half bowler (Viv Richard)
1 quarter bowler (tendulkar)
Gilchrist Keeper

It is interesting that there is no place for Miandad in your team, someone with a proven record in World Cup games in Australia. Viv, Sachin and Ponting pick themselves but I rate Javed better than Lara, Kallis and Steve Waugh in ODIs.

Miandad was in the team but I had to pull him out and put Waugh in because of lack of bowling options. That was the last change I did before posting the team.

Re: Your Greatest World Cup Playing 11 Ever
Sachin Tendulkar
Gordon Greeninge
Vivian Richards
Clive Lloyd (Captain)
Adam Gilchrist (wicket keeper)
Garfield Sobers
Kapil Dev
Wasim Akram
Michael Holding
Andy Roberts
Waqar Younis
Re: Your Greatest World Cup Playing 11 Ever
The list should not just include players with excellent ODI records but those who have actually performed on cricket's biggest stage. Hence despite being a great cricketer, Botham does not make my team because he did not do enough in World Cup games to merit a place in an all-time eleven.
Sachin Tendulkar
Adam Gilchrist (wk)
Ricky Ponting
Viv Richards
Javed Miandad
Brian Lara
Imran Khan (c)
Wasim Akram
Shane Warne
Glenn McGrath
Joel Garner, Ambrose or Andy Roberts (all star performers)
On second thoughts:
Sachin Tendulkar
Adam Gilchrist (wk)
Ricky Ponting
Viv Richards
Javed Miandad
Brian Lara
Imran Khan (c)
Kapil Dev
Wasim Akram
Shane Warne
Glenn McGrath (or Joel Garner....again a very tough one to decide)
Re: Your Greatest World Cup Playing 11 Ever
We cannot ignore lara given his talent and ability to change the match alone....
but we also need a stabilizer so i would put kallis over javed becasue kallis can also be used as sixth bowler in case one of the bowlers is having a a bad day....plus he is a better fielder..kallis can also be used at any position given the match condition...he came as an opener, one down, 2 down , 3 down...so we can use him at different positions.
i picked sanga over gili because we have enough explosive bats down the order (kapil, imran and wasim with richards and lara), so it is good to have sanga who is more established than gili on different type of pitches i.e. srilankan or indian dusty spin pitches or bouncy aussies or SA. With 400 ODIs and average above 40 plus 400 catches he deserves to be in the team
There is no ODI team without waqar younis, best ever bowling statistics in ODI history with 415 wickets in 260 matches with such a fantastic strike rate of 30, economy of 4.5 and 27 times 4+ wickets.... but i have been told that this team is based on players' performance in the world cup only....so i had to keep waqar out. He did not play many WCs..
I picked garner over mcgrath and holding purely becasue Garner had both mcgrath and holding in him..quick, mean and very economic. **
Sachin Tendulkar
Sangakkara (WC)
Ricky Ponting
Viv Richards
Brian Lara
Kallis
Kapil Dev
Imran Khan (c)
Wasim Akram
Shane Warne
Joel Garner**
Re: Your Greatest World Cup Playing 11 Ever
^ Why not pick Misbah if you wanted a stabilizer. I hear he builds platforms for a living.
Re: Your Greatest World Cup Playing 11 Ever
or Gavaskar! I believe he once played out the full 60 overs and remained 36*

Sachin Tendulkar Sangakkara (WC) Ricky Ponting Viv Richards Brian Lara Kallis Kapil Dev Imran Khan (c) Wasim Akram Shane Warne Joel Garner**
Totally forgot about Joel Garner, so difficult to score runs off because of his height and the bounce he produced as a result.... he would walk into most all-time ODI XIs

Last night i saw his interview about that memorable match and an Indian on the pitch was requesting him to leave the ground
Re: Your Greatest World Cup Playing 11 Ever
yea it was tough decision by me too and even their performance were equal in WC but Ambrose was slightly better so got place in WC XI else no doubht Garner is always 1st choice for all-time ODI XI

Re: Your Greatest World Cup Playing 11 Ever
so seems like tendulkar and viv richaards will be part of any ODI team...
by the way, not so sure of ponting. remember, WC can be held in india/SL as well and ponting was not so good on these dusty spin pitches but such is his class, you just cant keep him out of the final eleven! i thought about kevin Peterson as well who could play equally good on any pitch and was a genuine match winner but ponting is still ponting!
