Re: Your first davat
For the first time ever I cooked a proper meal for Ira’s parents.. I made dhai bhallay, matar palao (my speciality), mahru’s chicken (you have heard a lot about that), koftay (Lusi’s recipe), bhindi gosht, potato cutlets, and it was either kulfi or ras malai for dessert.. I forgot. Everything turned out excellent and they loved the food.
I made the dessert and koftay day in advance.. rest I started cooking that same day and had it all ready in a few hours. I used to be soo efficient ![]()
When I was living in Karachi, we have had some unexpected guests drop by very often.. my mom had visited me there and left my freezer filled with samosa, and shami kabab so for those guests I used to start with samosa chai and for dinner it will be chicken karahi, matar chawal, and fry some shami kabab.. I also remember making laziza packet kheer as an instant dessert or serving tutti fruity icecream because our freezer always had that ![]()
Re: Your first davat
The first dawat I made chicken salan and keema matar with boiled rice…because these were the only things I knew how to make…![]()
I used to mess up any kind of rice for atleast a year before I kinda started getting them right so it was always boiled rice for me…
The husband taste tested it a day in advance when I cooked them…
Dont remember what was for dessert…
The guests invited were my husband’s room mate’s brother and his family…I never knew those people back then but now when I think about it,it was actually a feast for them…!!
I stayed away from hosting anything for another 6 months…the next thing was another dinner for a few of his friends and their families, where I made the goat pulao, 2-3 salans, chicken cutlets and I think it was a trifle for dessert…
the compliment I got was ‘we never knew you could cook’…
made my day…![]()
In my first davat, I made mutter pulao, chicken karahi, koftay, rotiyan and gajar ka halwa and raita. I made halwa in advance and rest of the dishes I made in the morning of that day. I made rotiyan at home so it is a bit difficult for me to make
15 rotiyan.
The dinner was good, as it was my first davat everyone enjoyed it. Now I use deep naan instead of making rotiyan at home.
Re: Your first davat

Re: Your first davat
I did my first dawat when I was around 13, for a group of friends. The main dish was macaroni and cheese (made from scratch, no instant stuff), a nice big salad and loads of different cakes.
It went really well, and I learnt a lot from it, including who to form friendships with!
Re: Your first davat
Not exactly a dawat, but the first big meal I cooked after I got married was for eid. We just had people popping by.
I cooked:
Dum ka keema
Bombay aloo
Chana salan
Seekh kebabs (these were pre-made)
Paratha's
Sheer khurma
Hmm sure I'm missing something.....
But the first dawat was for my hubby's friend and wife, menu as follows:
*Appetisers:
*
- Poppadams with: Onion and tomato salsa, mango chutney, achaar, and mint raita (I made the salsa and raita)
Starters:
- Tandoori chicken (marinated night before - cooked on day)
- Kofte kebabs with cherry tomatoes and baby onions - (marinated night before - cooked on day)
- Spicy roast potatoes (cooked on day)
*Mains:
*
- Lamb korma (cooked day before)
- Karhai chicken (I think I made this on the day)
- Palak paneer (made on the day)
- Mattar pilau (made on the day)
- Tarka daal - I know this didn't go with the menu but hubby's wife likes daal (made on the day)
- Naan (shop bought)
**Accompaniments:
**Mint and corriander chutney
Cheese salad
Green salad
Cucumber raita
All made on the day.
Dessert:
Gajjar halwa (made night before)
Kulfi
Re: Your first davat
My first ever dawat was such a huge flop and a total disaster
.. how can i ever forget that awful day
My dad’s first cousin and his family ( 8 members ) came to England for a visit… Dad asked me to have then stay over at my place … all was good until i realized i had to cook for them too , that time i knew crap about cooking ![]()
I made Chicken biryani … that came out looking like coal biryani
Koftay .. that came out looking like shorba wala keema ![]()
and ras malai .. that too came out looking like ras malai ka halwa ![]()
the only good thing on the table was water and naan ( from the tandoor) …
needless to say , aunty took over cooking for the entire time that they were with me ![]()

Re: Your first davat
Ooh I remember that. After wedding, we had the inlaws over. I remember there was a football match and bil came over to watch that and help set up too, as we hadnt yet put together the chairs for the dining table yet, lol.
Food wise it went fine, surprisingly...apart from the fact that we over estimated. A lot. Sent everyone home with leftovers and ate that for 2-3 days after

Re: Your first davat
My in-laws came over for dinner a few days after we got married, it was kind of a surprise thing for them and my in-laws don't each much fancy food...so, I just made a couple of things. Chicken pulao, chappal kababs, aloo gosht, salad, raita, made rotis by myself (his parents, my parents + sister and the 2 of us) - the roti-making was extremely difficult. =/ For dinner, we had chocolate ice cream topped with strawberries lol.
Re: Your first davat
@ devi

@S_punk did they like the food ?? ![]()
Re: Your first davat
My in-laws loved it haha, they were surprised bcos I think they thought I didn't know how to cook or anything at all. It was a success overall though. =]
