A trick I learnt to get more control and cleaner line is to keep your EYES OPEN while applying the eyeliner.
Most people tend to close their eyes and end up with squigly lines. Also always use short ,thin strokes and apply like a connect the dots rather than one single stroke and then build the line.
Also to get the winged look rather than what most girls do i.e stretch the outer edge of the eye lid , just start backwards and make a small V at the outer edge and fill it in so you can control the thickness and length of the "wing"

I don't think Kate Middleton's eyeliner makes her eyes look better at all.. Liquid liner along the bottom looks a bit harsh on her, doesn't enhance her looks at all imo.. Her sis Pippa does her liner the same way as well..
I think Rihanna's eyeliner tends to really bring out her eyes and no matter how crazily she's dressed or whatever her hair colour is I do think her eye makeup is always spot on and looks perfect..
Also there was one year Aishwarya was at Cannes and was given an amazing smokey-eyed look, she looked stunning..

my favorite technique is to smudge some pencil liner on the upper and lower lash line, kind of like a simple smokey effect, but definitely not as intense as in Molly's picture above, but i won't do it if i'm looking too tired because it can make it look worse

I like how Angelina Jolie has her eyes in the above picture. I actually don't really like Kate Middleton's look - i think it kind of ages her plus i never like eyeliner on the actual outer rim of the eye - it always reminds me of old biddy's lol. I perfer the eyeliner to be inside the rim. Sometimes I like the flick, sometimes not. I'm hopeless at winged eyeliner so just stick to a flick if i'm being adventurous! HAH!
