Cool thread. Let’s see, the standard choices…Heer Ranjha, Mirza Sahiba, Sassi Punnun, Sohni Mahiwal, Kima Malki. My favorite is actually that of Jatti Ram Kaur and Kehar Singh.

Kehar Singh was a rather poor fellow who got married to Jatti Ram Kaur. Actually, Mister Surinder Shinda explains it much better than I do:

Oh sorry. Here's the summary from the link:
"Central Idea : This song is about the tragic murder of Kehar Singh, a well to do Jat of Kasur who had fallen on bad days. He was, in fact, in such a sorry state that when he went to fetch his newly wed wife, Ram Kaur from his in-laws on muqlawa, his shrewd mother-in-law simply refused to let her go on the grounds that Kehar Singh was too poor to support a wife. Kehar Singh, a self-respecting person could not bear such misgiving - he went straight to Ferozepore and got recruited. After a few years of military service he returned to proudly display his hard earned wealth. But the mother-in-law had other plans for him ! On that very night while asleep he was cut to death for the 700 gm of gold he carried. Ram Kaur raised alarm and roused the village. The police arrived and the whole family was nabbed. This is how greed hath uprooted many a well established house."
