Your children are not your children...

I was reading Kahlil Gibran’s THE PROPHET and this beautiful section caught my attention..

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
**They come through you but not from you **
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow
which you cannot visit, not even in you dreams.

You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward not tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let our bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

.. Kahlil Gibran

As a father of a one yr old chap life has certainly took a turn as this boy has certainly crept in out life and whatever we do our lives have been moulded for every need and care of the baby.. but certainly they belong to future.. how much should we try to mould our children.. should we apply our control to every action they take or just guide them ..

man degas where have you been..i was thinking about you
good to see you back..thats all i wanted to say because i didnt read your thread yet :)

we are just suppose to guide them tell them rite from wrong, and should not hold their fingers forever. They have life of their own and they know what they have been taught, let them make their own decisions, don't captivate their minds, cuz no matter what you do u wont be able to put a ban on their emotions.

degas my man, where have u been, and yara,,, boht boht mubabrak ho. :D baap bun gaya hay,,, wheres the mithayee...
its great to see u back... keep in touch man :) and my piyaar to the little one :)
God bless.

Reading Gibran is absolutely amazing. Read more Degas, you will feel like your eyes have been opened for the first time.

The subject is also amazing. I am going through the same phase watching Noor in her second year of life. Amazed as she learns new words, mannerisms and behaviour each and every day.

I often wonder how I am going to let her be the person she is meant to be without influencing her. I fear that I may restrict her personal development in some way and lose some part of nature's wonderful way.

Tough job being a parent and watching from the sidelines.....

There is no clear answer to this. just depends on the situation. Tough isn't it?

Gibran's a confused case.. i dint like the book.. and it's better not to read it as well...
just raise you kids as islam teaches..

I take it what Gibran is saying is un-islamic?

^ yup.
but it's not that, it's just he's got twisted ideas.. n the book has nude pictures(sketches)..

Khalil gibran's poetry is amazing...

my fav lines are

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow
which you cannot visit, not even in you dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.

Maybe I'm missing something here....

Mystical, can you please tell me what part of the passage Degas has posted is un-Islamic?

I find that most of Gibran's work is open to interpretation. Maybe I'm wrong.

I don't think that the drawings and sketches are the same in all Gibran's books. Did the author draw them? Mine are completeley without illustrations......
