Younus Khan's struggling performance

I think pretty much we all would like to have YK sit in dressing room and let a youngster take his place now. But looks like team management have high hopes with him. Lets see how far it goes but I think if he doesnt play well against India and if we lose (God forbid) then he’ll definitely be dropped

***SYDNEY: Pakistan coach Waqar Younis on Thursday backed senior batsman Younis Khan to return to form in the World Cup despite a worrying slump.
**The 37-year-old has managed just 1, 7, 9, 11, 25 and 19 in the six matches Pakistan have played since arriving in New Zealand last month. *Younis was not in the selectors’ planning for the World Cup but the veteran hit a hundred in the 3-2 defeat against New Zealand in the United Arab Emirates in November last year and forced his way into the 15-man squad.
“I think the pitches in Australia and New Zealand are challenging and initially batsmen struggle here but he is a senior batsman. We need him to get into the right kind of form soon. I am confident that he will come into that soon,” said Waqar.
If Pakistan persist with Younis they have to drop either of their two talented youngsters, Umar Akmal or Sohaib Maqsood. It will be a tough decision as Younis has passed 50 just twice in his three previous World Cups.
Pakistan lost both their warm-up games before their recent New Zealand series and then were defeated in both one-day internationals against the Black Caps. They found themselves a bowler short after spinning all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez was unable to bowl due to a suspension for an illegal action last year.
“It’s difficult to find the right combination. We will sit down in the next three days and see. Still, there are three more days to go before the big one,” said Waqar.
The big one, of course, is Sunday’s sell-out World Cup blockbuster against India in Adelaide. ”India has always been a tough opponent, we are not going to take it easy. We will wake up that morning in a positive frame of mind and try to give our best.”
Pakistan go into the game having lost all five of their World Cup clashes against their neighbours at the World Cup. But Waqar said wins in the World Cup warm-up games over Bangladesh and England this week will give his team much-needed momentum, without reading too much into it. ”Look, these are just warm-up games and one must not draw conclusions from here. But we must take positives, they have given us the right kind of momentum.”
Waqar described the World Cup as an “open” competition.
“You
c
an judge this World Cup to be very open, some teams are in good form, some are getting into the groove. So, it can be anybody’s cup,” said the Pakistan coach.
“Cricket is such a game. What happened in 1992 (Pakistan winning the World Cup) can happen again. That’s the beauty of cricket.”

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

What is big deal in the article?

This is how Younis performs in ODI, even when Younis was at his peak. His average in Australia and NZ is 18. His career average is 31. On average he hits one century every 35 innings and that also mostly against weaker teams playing on friendly docile pitches of Sharjah, Dubai, or Pakistan. He is now old, so his career average performance can be considered as above average (keeping his age as factor). So, I think we have to wait around 30 odd innings if not 40 innings to see another century from Younis.

I think journalists do not know statistics. To me, it would be news (and for Pakistan a pleasant news) that Younis make century in this world cup (I would be delighted if that happens).

[Anyhow, Younis is no exception. Most Pakistani selected batsmen in world cup have similar record, some even worse than Younis. So, carry on Pakistan, pray for miracles].

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

The article is more based on the coach's review about YK which is more important than the later analysis.

I strongly think that if YK comes when indian spinners are on, it can be helpful. Otherwise, no chance

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

Yunuf Khan is like a winning racing horse...he was once a valuable racer but now it's time for him to retire and enjoy life. wish him all the best.

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

^^ I think Younis Khan is a good test player and he still deserve a place in test, at least for couple of more years. But Younis never deserved a place in ODI (from day one). If it would be to him, he would not mind playing 200 out of 300 balls (50 overs) team gets in ODI to play, making 80 to 100 runs (that he might be able to do every 4 to 5 inning in that many balls without getting out). That is fine in test, but in ODI, no team can afford that.

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

People always forget that except Misbah, there is no single player capable of keeping his wicket intact when needed. With Younis there is at least hope that he survive the tricky part of the innings and get pressure off Misbah and later batsmen.

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

^^ Do you mean, with population of 200 million and cricket as craze in the country, Pakistan have no reasonable players for test and ODIs?

Actually, there are many capable players in the country, but due to nepotism, parchi, rushwat, corruption, like and dislike, tasub and promoting players from one area (that is also a well known fact and is regularly getting mentioned in media), Pakistan could not find a world class talented team. Most present Pakistani test as well as ODI players, they would not have been in team if merit was criteria of selection.

Fact is that, with such practices and attitudes, many good players leave cricket unnoticed and many more capable players do not even care to make cricket as their career.

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

YK you have disappointed me man

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

It is well known fact that in long run, players ODI average and SR converge with same players 'list A' average and SR. Similarly, Test average converges with first class average. But still, Pakistan regularly select players with pathetic list a average and SR in ODI, and pathetic FC average in Test, leaving players with much better average and SR unnoticed. This is the reason, all world countries select players seeing their recent domestic performances, and it is obvious too, because if A is better than B, then there is no reason that A average in domestic cricket would not be better than B ... so when team gets selected ignoring players domestic performances, preferring inferior quality players over better performers, than this only happens due to corruption, nepotism and biases of PCB management and selection committee.

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

As long as Pakistan is winning the world cup, I have no problem YK being Salim Malik of 1992 :D

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

^^^ Well, even though what you are wishing is more like a dream, but as far as I am concerned, the way Pakistan cricket is ignoring merit, slowly good players would lose interest in cricket and cricket in Pakistan would become like Hockey and Squash, where we would not have capable players to select.

Just imagine, once I am told (and also read) that Younis Khan who learned his cricket in Karachi and used to play in Karachi was told by Rashid Latif that he is good player who deserve to get selected in national team, but if he (Younis) would stay and keep playing from Karachi than his career would not go forward, and then Rashid advised Younus that he (Younis) try to make a career from NWFP, as then he would have better chance to get selected in Pakistan national team.

If what I heard is true, then you can realize why good players would even try to perform, as in the end it would be other merits (different than performance) that would make a player move forward in Pakistan cricket career... so players would be putting effort where it matters (contacts, safarish, bribe, place of residence, and so on) and that would result in long term deterioration of Pakistani cricket.

Re: Younus Khan’s struggling performance

He will have stomach pain tomorrow till Sunday :sunnyboy:

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

I don't know what all of you are talking about, YK is playing upto his potential, after all his ODI average is 31 or 32... i guess that speaks a volume... he will continue to score 9, 19, 29 and occasionally 40+ score or a century to stay in the team for another year... he is going to continue like this.

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

I agree what Saleem said. Younis Khan is good test player. I would have preferred Fawad Alam or Sarfraz Ahmed to be on the team. I guess..selectors will have good chance to re-evalute their one day selection after the world cup.

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

YK will perform on the big stage. Be afraid India, be very afraid!!

India / Pak game is a high pressure game where only experience will survive. The old dogs YK, Afridi and Misbah have no choice but to perform. It is their last World cup!!

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

Sending duas YK and the great Misbah's way for a long and steady partnership. May the duo never get out.

Re: Younus Khan's struggling performance

Younis Khan played his first ODi in Feb 2000. Till now, Younis played 251 innings (238 complete innings), with average 31 and SR 75. Younis played 18 ODI in Australia/NewZealand and his average in these countries is 18 too.

Younis first ODI century was in Feb 2004, played in Sri-Lanka.

Next century came 2 years later in July 2006, played in Southampton UK.
Next century came over a year later in Sept 2007, played in India.

Then Younis made 3 centuries in 2008 ... that was in Dhaka, Karachi and Abu Dhabi.

Then younis became too old.

Anyhow, 6 years later, in 2014, Younis made a century again, in abu Dhabi.

That is the record of Younis ODI centuries. One can see that apart of one century in Southampton (UK), all centuries scored by Younis were on docile pitches of Subcontinent and Abu Dhabi.

Younis never made century on bouncy or pacy pitches. Waisay bhie, as his record says, it is very unlikely that Younis would make any big score soon after his last century in Abu Dhabi, and that means, it is very unlikely that Younis would score big in Australia or New Zealand, But then, there is no harm in having hopes and dreams.

As for Misbah, I do not think he played any ODI in Australia, though he played 2 ODis in New Zealand (that was couple of weeks ago, in January 2015). Let see how he would play on pitches of Australia and New Zealand in this world cup.
