Younis refuses to lead Pakistan/Mohammad Yousuf appointed as new captain

Re: Younis refuses to lead Pakistan

Younus should understand that afterall he is MAKESHIFT captain and makeshift captains do not dictate policies.

He should not have resigned, if he has, Yousuf should be made captain and Younus shud be punished for indiscipline.

Re: Younis refuses to lead Pakistan

it's their job to play cricket just like it's my job to work in a company. If i dont agree with something i protest but in an orderely way.

He should have done the same. Not put out one line in a conference and feed the media frenzy

Re: Younis refuses to lead Pakistan

Will this affect Youni's chances of becoming a permanent captain when Inzi finally goes?

Mohammad Yousuf to lead Pakistan

**Reports in Pakistan are suggesting that Mohammad Yousuf has been appointed captain for the Champions Trophy in place of Younis Khan, who earlier today refused to take up the Pakistan captaincy. **

A** PCB official confirmed to Cricinfo that Yousuf will take over as captain** and an announcement would be made shortly by the PCB.

PCB officials have been engaged in a day-long meeting to decide what action to take in light of Younis’s startling press conference this morning.

Abdul Razzaq has been made vice-captain.

Younis Khan had sensationally declined to captain Pakistan in the Champions Trophy just two days before the team was due to fly to India, forcing an emergency meeting of the Pakistan Cricket Board to decide a course of action.

While the appointment of a new captain was the immediate concern, Younis’s immediate future is also being discussed. There is a strong possibilty of him being dropped not only for the Champions Trophy, but series and tournaments till the World Cup.

Younis was appointed captain late last month after the ICC slapped a four-match ban on captain Inzamam-ul-Haq at the hearing for The Oval controversy and has been the official vice-captain for almost two years now.

At a surprise press conference at Gaddafi Stadium, sitting alongside Bob Woolmer, a grave looking Younis told reporters, “I don’t want to be a dummy captain and the reason why I have refused the captaincy will be revealed afterward.” Giving no further details, Younis walked out of the press conference.

Bob Woolmer told Cricinfo that Younis had resigned for a number of personal reasons. “I am very saddened that he has resigned because he is a very good player. I have a great relationship with him. My view is that he has resigned for a number of personal reasons and those reasons are best told by Younis himself. I will get on with my responsibility as coach as best as possible and continue to prepare the team for the Champions Trophy.”

Speculation is rife as to what those reasons are. It has been suggested by some that the inclusion of Faisal Iqbal in the squad as a replacement for Inzamam, without the approval of Younis, triggered the reaction. Another theory argues that Younis was unhappy at being made captain only for the Champions Trophy and not beyond, a decision endorsed by the PCB’s ad-hoc committee yesterday which confirmed their support for Inzamam as captain from the West Indies series onwards. All of this, as yet, remains unsubstantiated.

Of more immediate concern is Younis’s place in the squad now. Salim Altaf, director operations, PCB, and manager designate for the Trophy, Talat Ali tried convincing Younis to change his mind during a 30-minute meeting immediately after Younis’s announcement, but apparently failed. “Younis has not told us any reason and we are in negotiations with him,” Altaf told reporters. “As soon as we get any details we will reveal them to the media.”

Since then, PCB officials including Altaf, Ali, Abbas Zaidi and chairman Shaharyar Khan have been locked in a crisis meeting to resolve the issue. It is thought that his place as a player for the West Indies series, the tour to South Africa and the World Cup - as well as the impending Champions Trophy, is the subject of discussion.

Re: Younis refuses to lead Pakistan

Alas!!! this is all we needed :( :(
anyways... i serious think Pak has just lost a good future caption... what ever the reason, what ever happens ...this stain will remain with Younis khan for ever and i doubt that he will ever make as a future caption (knowing PCB)

Re: Younis refuses to lead Pakistan

I am not against the step of Younus Khan if his hands were being tied and someone tried to dictate him BUT this is not the way to do things. We have heard a lot and I am sure both Strauss and Flintoff were willing to captain England but none of the two stuned everyone by a press conference. I am sure both of them were in touch with ECB on the matter but non of the two give public comments. Right way for Younus would have been to talk to PCB (and not to press) and tell them he is not willing to captain the team and will only captain without taking dictation.

Younus Khan is the employee of PCB and just like in a company if you have problems, you talk to your manager and not call a press conference.

Although with all passion I wanted Younus to captain Pakistan before, but now I DONT WANT HIM TO CAPTAIN Pakistan (at least in near future). I don’t want a captain who can lose a temper to the extent that he don’t talk to PCB. MUHAMMAD YOUSUF is my captain for after INZI era. :k:

Mohammad Yousuf has been appointed the new captain for the Champions Trophy in place of Younis Khan, following a startling day which began with the latter publicly refusing to accept the Pakistan captaincy in the morning. A PCB official confirmed to Cricinfo that Yousuf will take over as captain and Abdul Razzaq will act as his deputy. Younis, having apologised to the PCB for his actions, has been retained in the squad and an official announcement is expected shortly by the PCB.

The decisions come after a day-long emergency meeting of PCB officials, including chairman Shaharyar Khan, after Younis had sensationally declined to captain Pakistan in the Champions Trophy just two days before the team was due to fly to India.

Younis was appointed captain late last month after the ICC slapped a four-match ban on captain Inzamam-ul-Haq at the hearing for The Oval controversy and has been the official vice-captain for almost two years now.

But at a surprise press conference at Gaddafi Stadium, sitting alongside Bob Woolmer, a grave looking Younis told reporters, “I don’t want to be a dummy captain and the reason why I have refused the captaincy will be revealed afterward.” Giving no further details, Younis walked out of the press conference.

For a while, Younis’s position in the team, for the Champions Trophy as well as subsequent assignments were in doubt. It has been learnt that during the meeting a few officials were in favour of removing Younis from the team altogether. Ultimately though, Younis apologised for his actions and expressed the desire to play on as a batsman.

Yousuf has some experience in positions of responsibility; he was official vice-captain before Younis took over on the tour to India in 2004-05 and had captained on occasions when Inzamam was absent. **Having been groomed as a potential successor for two years now, the chances of Younis becoming captain in the short-term are, according to one PCB official, “extremely dim.” **

Good. Yousuf should captain Pakistan even after Inzi era. I don’t care if he is laid back. If Younus think he is NECESSARY for Pakistan and he can solve the things by calling the press conference, then be it! I am really furious on the way Younus handled all this. I don’t want a short tempered Pakistani captain.

Re: Younis refuses to lead Pakistan

Younis would make such an awesome captain.. ill admit i have secretly been waiting for inzi to step down and younis to take over..

Re: Younis refuses to lead Pakistan

Younis is a principalled man, and i am sure there is a very valid reason for him doing such a thing, he is not a drama queen, and i am sure some1 in the pcb was trying to make him a dummy captain, if so then he took the right step!

Re: Muhammad yousaf nominated as new captian

^U'd rather have a sucky captain, instead of a very relaxed, friendly, and fairly good captain just cuz of one incident? And all this even tho you don't know the reason why he did what he did? Say good bye to winning ICCT or WC. You need a good captain to win these big tournaments.

^Definitely, cricket is a team game.

He should learn to be a team man. We are just out of a disaster and he is creating another one, let him do what he wants.

I have a feeling that Imran Khan is pushing him to act macho.

Re: Muhammad yousaf nominated as new captian

Well this one incident tells us he is not a GOOD CAPTAIN that you are routing for. This is not at all the characteristic of a good captain to blow it out in the public. Looks like its just too early for him to be a captain. I’ld rather have sucky captain than having one for whome i dont know if he will remain captain of step down in public a day before the world cup.

Re: Muhammad yousaf nominated as new captian

So you'd rather lose than win.
