Younis Khan: “I’m doing my best in leading a team that has been given to me” © AFP

Younis Khan, standing in as captain for the injured Shoaib Malik, has dissociated himself from the decision to include Shoaib Akhtar in the playing XI for the second Test, saying such questions should be put to decision-makers and not to him.
“I am not captain here, nor the coach,” Younis wrote in his column in the Hindustan Times on Sunday. “I’ve been asked about the decision to to play Shoaib who is obviously not well. I am not responsible for certain decisions that have been taken. I was informed on the morning of the match that I would lead the team and I’m doing my best in leading a team that has been given to me.”
Shoaib Akhtar, who took six wickets in the first Test, was laid low by a chest infection ahead of the second match in Kolkata and was taken to hospital for treatment. Mohammad Sami was also suffering from a chest infection but both were included in the XI.
Younis also wrote that, had he been part of the decision-making process, he would have done things differently. But he admitted the coach and the manager were in an uncomfortable position at the start of the Test as Pakistan faced several injury problems. “[They had] to count bodies and see whether we could field a full team or not.”
Younis has twice turned down the captaincy offer - in October 2006 just before the Champions Trophy and in April this year following Pakistan’s exit from the World Cup. But he accepted the vice-captaincy for the tour of India, replacing Salman Butt in a role that he had played for nearly two years under Inzamam-ul-Haq.

someone has to come under the knife for playing an unfit shoaib …

Re: Younis dissociates himself from team selection

Younus again decided to do his laundry in front of the world

Re: Younis dissociates himself from team selection

not exactly the best time for this

Re: Younis dissociates himself from team selection

time and again younis has shown that he doesn’t give a crap when it comes to Pakistan’s captaincy :smack:

Re: Younis dissociates himself from team selection

Unnecessary criticism from my point of view. This is the price that Younis Khan has to pay of being blunt and clear, rather than exiting from the cargo section (much like how Inzamam vanished from the airport after the World Cup blunder). Being defensive and a refusal of facing the crowd has a bigger face value in our society. Telling it like it is, is often rubbished under the carpet;

The title of the article is quite misleading, I do not think Younis Khan has done anything to disassociate himself from the team or from his nation. He replied to questions with straight-forward answers, perhaps he should have accepted all responsibility of pushing Akhtar into the team and had he done that, at the end of the day, he would have seen himself hanged. Loud and clear, Younis Khan, instead of shifting the blame to any particular member, separated himself from the position of an unfair call of being labeled as throwing his laundry in the public. After going through the news articles before this test match began, the only thing that was close to being confirmed was Shoaib Malik's injury. Younis Khan becoming captain was only talked about, until the test match actually began. How many choices did he have in the team selection when his role is not even confirmed until before the coin toss? Poor timing or not, I do not believe Younis Khan played any part in team selection, and when a time is for him to come out and clear the allegations, the weight in the pendulum shifting against him, doubles. Younis Khan has every right to say what he did. He still remains the best choice as a captain after December 2008. Hats off to PCB for a brilliant decision.

Re: Younis dissociates himself from team selection

there is a difference between dirty laundry and facts. younis is just stating the obvious. our selectors and management rarely get punished for loss while captain(s) take the entire blame.

Re: Younis dissociates himself from team selection

Nothing wrong with what he said. Younis also says in the article that he found out in the morning that he is gonna be leading Pakistan. It was a last minute decision...so Younis cannot be blamed for playing an unfit shoaib.

Re: Younis dissociates himself from team selection

I don't understand all the hullabaloo. Younis was asked about Shoaib by some reporter and he just set the record straight about Shoaib's inclusion in the team. He very rightly does not want to be blamed for things he had no control over. And he most certainly did not go out of his way to say this as some people here are unwisely suggesting.

Re: Younis dissociates himself from team selection

He did not say all this in "interview" instead this is his "column". He should avoid mentioning the "facts" that can lead to "hullabaloo" and derail already fragile Pakistani team ....

Re: Younis dissociates himself from team selection

^ I agree.
