so anyone in the TO area get a chance to go out to this event? it was held my Young Muslims (first time i’ve heard of them actually), and it was at the IMO in Rexdale.
they had a pretty good topic - Muslim Family in the Making - and you didn’t necessarily have to be a mother or father for it to benefit you. ahh, they had speakers like Sheikh Abdul Hamid (anyone hear of him before), the Imam of IMO and a couple of other speakers.
it was a pretty good program. the main theme was sort of how kids of immigrants (our parents mostly) and getting caught up in the Canadian/Western culture and the culture of our parents.
one of the speakers was saying something that really stood out for me was that whenever our kids ask if we can do something (hang out at the mall, go for movies), we tell them ‘no, it’s not islamic’, and we use this for pretty much anything they want to do. and it really puts a bad image of islam in our children’s minds, and in the minds of their friends. well my mom and dad won’t let me go to a birthday party because it’s unislamic. so how do you think the kid’s gonna feel, and what do you think his/her friend’s gonna think of us?
so just don’t say it’s unislamic for the sake of it…make your child understand why it’s not allowed. and if it’s not such a big thing, don’t make it a big deal.
anywho..i thought it was good. it’s good to see programs and lectures like these are relevant to what is happening in our society today. we need more of 'em..
