If I could take one word away from desi’s when taking about childhood stories, it would be NAUGHTY!
Why are uncles and aunties not able to find ANY other word to describe how you were, when you were young?
Got a call from a family uncle today:
Uncle: ye gaia bol rahi hai?
Me: Jee uncle, app kasay hain?
Uncle: Fine, you know, aap ithni bari ho gay, aur hum ko pata bi nahi chala.
Me: doing an awkward hehe
Uncle: mujay tou abi be yad hai, aap tou ithneyyyyyy naughty hoti thi, kay main kiya bethaion!!!
Just sayin’, please pick another word to describe my childhood. Thank you!!!
I spent my childhood in London and my dad makes fun of me because whenever I felt the need of going to the bathroom as a child, I used to say “jhanda pakistan ka bathroom may jana hai” wth???!! How is bathroom associated with Pakistan? IT IS EMBARRASSING! lol
Not if you're a guy. I could though understand why a grown up lady would find the whole deal a little awkward when told how naughty she must've been. Sorry I guess.
SO no one gets creeped out by the word naughty? ufff.
LOL. I think it's one of those things that are not so embarrassing if you're ONLY among your own Desi people....because there's a mutual understanding of the culture and you STILL understand that uncle/aunti didn't mean it in an inappropriate way.
It would be more of an issue ...IF...(now imagine this)......a Gora person was also there with you and Uncle is shaking his head from side-to-side...and wagging his finger in your face...."I remember how naaaaaty you were, Gaia." See, now isn't that worse? And there's always the chance that the Gora person won't understand what "naaaatttty" is let alone thinking it's a word from the English language.
Even when looked at from a western perspective...the word has different connotations depending upon the situation/context. If you ONLY have one interpretation of the word.....could the problem be your own filthy mind, Gaia? Tsk, tsk. :p
