Maybe things have changed now, but I studied in Pakistan till 10th grade (O’level). The grading system at my school, and my relatives and friends, was that grades on homework and tests did not matter. You could get a 100, great but it didn’t matter.
We had 3 sets of exams. One for first term, second term and final. Regardless of what you made in first term, or second term, as long as you had a passing grade in the final exam, you passed the class. Looking back, one could slack off the entire year, and just pass the final exam and pass the class.
But if you failed even 1 final exam, you could take a retake. If you failed, you had to repeat the entire class again.
Who came up with this system? Was your school system different?
Re: You study all year, but 1 exam determines all. How and why?
That's much better than the Intermediate and bachelor's degree exams which was just 1 exam, so you don't even have to pretend you are studying, or even bother attending classes the whole year. All you need at the end is khilaofy some peon at the testing center and bring in all the books you want to write the paper.
Re: You study all year, but 1 exam determines all. How and why?
I don’t know about the school system, but the courses that I teach at University, I use one of several schemes for student evaluation.
For sophomore level courses, I make it a point that students need to pass ALL course components in order to pass the course. So, even if somebody gets a 100% on the exams, but only get 40% on an assignment, they can’t pass. Some call it harsh… but hey… the students in early years of University need to develop good work ethic and shouldn’t really selectively concentrate on specific components and only at times when they feel like it.
The polar opposite of this scheme is what I use in some senior level and graduate courses where I give students the option to devise their own weighting scheme within certain pre-specified parameters. If someone wants their exams to be weighed less heavily and assignments more heavily, then they can do that. If someone isn’t too big on class participation, they can shift the weight to another course component etc.
