You shouldn't get a runner for cramps, full stop

Whats your take on this? IMO, Strauss should have allowed a runner. Smith was cramping and got the treatment in middle too. This just leaves the bad taste.

I’ll wait for the time to see English player getting cramps and then denied a runner. Lets see what Mr Strauss will have to say then.

On the other hand ICC should make black and white rule. Runner for cramps or not and we have to take batsman’s word on cramps I guess there is no other way going around it.

. From our perspective, it was a crucial period of the game. I was on the field for 95 overs and just felt it was inconsistent, that’s all."

One day Strauss might regret this.

Re: You shouldn't get a runner for cramps, full stop

Whether or not you agree with Strauss, it is one of those things where it isnt really your call. Guest comes to your house, says I dont like sitting on this couch, may I lie on ur bed? Yes technically it is your call. Yes you think guests shouldnt lie on your bed when they come over for tea, full stop. But you dont say no. Thats just rude.

If ure feeling so preachy about the virtues of runners, have a word with him after. Dont look petty in public.

In one game ... he did something tht can be considered noble in cricketing world ... and in 2nd ... he ruined it..

Strauss behaviour is most disappointing and unsportsmanlike. As they say what goes around comes around.

It does not completely surprise me though because the English are known to resort to such rondi from time to time. The umpires' attitude also leaves a lot to be desired, they should have been a little more assertive & understanding of the situation and willing to allow a runner for Smith. They must stamp their authority in situations where something is clearly against the spirit of fair play

Re: You shouldn't get a runner for cramps, full stop

does anyone have the video link for this incident ?

Re: You shouldn't get a runner for cramps, full stop

What goes around comes around. Captains rarely stop anyone from having a runner these days. Heck, batsmen rarely ask for runners. Sooner or later Strauss will surely get the taste of his own medicine.

Re: You shouldn't get a runner for cramps, full stop

What was the over number when he requested a runner?

Kiwi batsman asked for runner only in 5th over? That I would've objected to, Kiwis probably knew that he would get 'injured' again so they gambled.

45th over i.e. Smith had been in the field for 95 straight overs when he asked for a runner!

Re: You shouldn't get a runner for cramps, full stop

Strauss has a lot to learn about captaincy... let's hope none of his players get into a situation where the other team captain denies a runner citing Strauss' take on the matter.

Re: You shouldn't get a runner for cramps, full stop

It was perfectly alright. Infact its no more in the hands of the captain, its with the umpires now, ICC made it clear today. So Strauss did the right thing...Apart from that, Smith was tired, not injured. I have never seen a rule which says that runner would be provided to tired players.
