“Where in India are you from? I bet somewhere from Northern India.”
This is what an indian client told me a few days back while talking to him over the phone, that too in urdu as he started conversation in urdu initially…:halo:
maiN apnay sar kaY baaloN ki qasam khaa kar kehtaa hooN, qasam saY, I never pronounced zeeraa as* jeeraa *or *Zabardast *as Jabardast.
And when making my sheen qaaf more solid, I told him that I was originally from Karachi which is in South of Pakistan, he said:
No wonder you are from there. Your family must have been migrated from Northern India. Aap ki urdu bahut Faseeh aur shustaa hai. Sirf aik northern india kaa rehnaY walaa hee iss lehjaY maiN baat kar saktaa hai. Aap shaair bhee ho kiyaa? Aap kaa talaffuz aur aap kay alfaaz kaa utaar chaRhaao bahut umda hai. Aap say baat kar kay bahut lutf andoz huvaa hooN…
I was like, Hyen??? He must have been speaking hindi not urdu as urdu is mostly spoken in Muslims family of India and hindi in hindu family and him being hindu, I did not expected him to speak such a great urdu and that too with a marvellous accent. So then, I realized Krishan Chander was an urdu novelist for no reason:)
And when finally I told him actually my parents migrated from JaY Poor.. he was like dekhaa:D
man… !!! You do get to talk to some people every now and then who make your day
Anwaar,
Especially in northern India, people do speak Urdu better than we do in Pakistan. Basically the origin of Urdu is India. All great poets, scholars, writers belongs to India, they are Muslims no doubt. But if you go back in the history of India, you will find Urdu as the primary language during the Muslim kingdom.
In Indian cities like Hyderabad Deccan, Lackhnow, Delhi, Bhopal, UP, CP, Bihar, etc, people do speak Urdu in legitimate form.
In Pakistan only Urdu speaking families who migrated from India, can speak good Urdu.
It really does not matter if people living in that vicinity are Muslims or non-Muslims. They learn from the neighborhood.
In some NWFP areas especially in Peshawar, I have met some really decent and amazing personalities who can speak much better Urdu than you or me. Why is that? Cuz they were eager to learn Urdu. You can also find Sindhi speaking people who can beat you in speaking Urdu.
…kuch logon ka Lahja aur alfaaz kii adaeegii hi baari bahtereen hotii hai… dil chahta hai kay woh boltay rahain aur hum suntay rahain… …
