You learn something new everyday.

Mods I couldn’t decide wether to put this in CULTURE or CORNER, feel free to move it.

So I went to my Sara’s house today, to practise our dance on “Chariya hon ta dil na lay” for her wedding. While having our dinner I got into to an interesting conversation with Sara’s sister Hajira, really sweet girl. She told me she has Urdu as her subject in A levels. We somehow started talking about literature and came acrosse urdu novelists and writers. She enlightened me about their history, writing style and more.

She told me “periods” in urdu are called “meetha baras” (Why the hell meetha? Who tasted it?). She read this novel about this one girl whos parents send out meethai when she gets her meetha baras for the first time. Then one day the parents die and she is left all alone. The line used to decrible her poor sistuation after that went something like . I though that was so beautifuly written if you look at it from a literary point of view, but then its a bit too weird to me when its in Urdu.

She said urdu literature relates alot to human art. Hajira named this one particular female writer (I forgot her name) who wrote (in her time era before partition)very openly, she was aggressive in her details, she wrote on topics like homosexuality, rape, and other sexually related matters. She wrote about them the first time in Urdu to spread some awareness to women at that time. She wrote stuff like . This just sounds too weird in Urdu.

I would like to read more just to see how far Urdu writers have gone to express their feelings. No wonder all these lahori women have Urdu Rasalay and Afsanay to read at night.

what u need is a hobby

haha all these short stories seems like one night stands :D

well Maharani

urdu literature ahve been quite open , and seriously speaking, same like english one.........
I have read a few novels in college days through library..
and they used to be of some what fun :)...............
coz the terms which are normally used relating body parts and sex is quite nice/amusing

like 'oss nay to her kisam kay nameem phaharhon kaa nashaa chakaa hai' ( like he have tastes all kind of females breast.
and then many other thigns as well..
so its not disgusting, its the writers way for defining what he actually feels..
and what I really think is that waht ever a writers writes is actually his/her own fantasy. there own way of looking thing or there ther own of doing things, like how they want to do it..

khair you can read a lot of them specially that Razzia Butt.
she used to write some nice novels.

No gama what I need is, you.

Cool breeze, the analogies are not disgusting or anything, its just that to me it sounded a bit weird. I had never heard anything like it before. I thought it was quiet interesting. I will get some stories, but will have trouble reading urdu and all those big words so I will get someone to read them to me. Maybe gamma can read them out loud.

guyB I read Sadat Hussan's "New Consitituion", translated version. It was nice.

He was even put behind the bars so many times with allegations of "obnoxious " writings , watever ppl think its a fact that he was legend a true legend.

what a pity,, come on gals, its your national language, you got to know it for sure..

the MEETHA BARA controversy is not actually a description of the human anatomy (whatever)

its was a much practised culture in the sub-continent; that when a girl used to gain her puberty...her parents would send out mithai in their family..friends and mauhala in a way to notify the people as in

"hello our girl has grown up and is marriage material now"

its kinda wierd but since the girls used to stay in purdah back then it was the only way to get em off....and plus that was the era of extremely early marriages starting from the age of 13 yrs and in some cases even 9!!!

although early marriages and unawareness at that time did lead to aother complications but that is another topic.

LM, keep dreaming sweety … all u can do is fantasize about me … well i guess there is no harm in it unless u start obsessesing .. :flower1: … stay in control

I want you. I need you.
