Re: You Know You Grew Up In Pakistan During The 90s When…

there were no cell phones…and poondie was done in a very different way in those days than today… PTC phone lineman was a very important person !!!

waqar younis and his reverse swing made us to believe in miracles…and we still cannot get out of that mentality except there is no waqar younis anymore!

believe me or not but hockey used to be popular those days and people used to follow it…i still remmeber 1994 hockey world cup final…i was sitting in my lounge watching the game..and a paint boy was painting our walls…the final got into penalties …it got so tense…soooo tense…the paint poy stopped painting as well…and then pakistan won..both of us started to shout, yell, hugged each other and then started to dance crazy…

there used to be so many musical concerts in Lahore every month in alhamra open air theater, lahore gymkhana, alhamra center, kinnaird college, and home economics college…you could not get into Kinnaird concerts unless your sister was attending…many girl friends would declare their boy friends theior brothers to get them in!

best poondie used to be at lahore gymkhana events**…Lahore cream used to be there!
**
there was no internet culture and guys used to play cricket in every ground…not anymore

there were no caller ids! but you gotta be careful of “observations” that people used to place on their phone via PTC to find-out culprits!

again, there were no laptops, there was no internet, there were no cell phones, there were only 3 tv channels…hard to believe most of us lived in that era not so long ago

Winter season used to be more intense and longer!

Going on a date used to be a major challenge… cafe zouk opened in 1994 and became a hot date point…salt n paper in the basement used to be a spot as well…

avari hotel used to be considered way more upscale than PC…yes believe me!!!

**Hsin Kuang **and taiwah used to be premier Chinese restaurants …19B soup used to be THE soup for me at Hsin Kaung!!!

Re: You Know You Grew Up In Pakistan During The 90s When…

  • The music scene was possibly the best ever with Junoon, Vital Signs, Hadiqa and so many other artists coming out with albums.
  • People had a social life.
  • There weren’t as many restaurants/food streets in Karachi, and not everyone lived in or around Burns Rd. We ate the ever so delicious thaila food despite being told not to (unhygienic!): gola ganda, those empty, mini samosas with chutney, bhel puri, bun kebabs, gol gappay etc
  • Summer = falsay from the thaila with kala namak sprinkled on top of it. Winter = nuts from the thaila
  • Climbing up trees, especially the ones that bore fruits and eating them during the hot days of summers, so no one would see us.
  • Loadshedding after dinner time meant PLAY TIME!
  • Making calls meant socializing time. Not everyone had phones at home, so if you had to go or if someone else came over to make a call, naturally, the kids tagged along to play with their buddies.
  • PCOs and those expensive PCO cards.
  • Getting through a telephone operator to make a long distance call. And LDCs were short, over within minutes.
