You know things are bad

when a couple elopes to Pakistan for protection!!!

Fearing persecution Afghan couple flee to Pakistan | DAWN.COM

Though on the positive end they didn’t run off to Iran, the CIS countries or India. Which is odd. Because most Afghans rather go there than go to Pakistan.

Re: You know things are bad

Very odd decision indeed… but they would not be the first to flee to Pakistan… and almost certainly not the last. :bummer:

Re: You know things are bad

Because fleeing to Pak is the easiest way :hinna: maybe.

Re: You know things are bad

Actually it isn't. The Salang pass makes it easier to get to Mazar. 2 hours to Mazar. 6 hours to Jalalabad.

Re: You know things are bad

They might have had friends or family in Pakistan, who they expected to help them. People you can trust are important when moving to a new place.

Re: You know things are bad

Because Pakland is a country generous enough to assimilate everyone, from across the border terrorists to ambassador come terrorists to eloping couples to illegal weapons to anything whatever :chai:

Re: You know things are bad

From which part of Pakistan they entered

Re: You know things are bad

Well pointed... but wasn't the Salang pass one of the deadliest roads in History, I swear its haunted by hundreds of dead soldiers from the Soviet era and later wars.... that place just gives you the creeps... I'd rather risk Khyber than the Salang route and especially avoid the Salang tunnel if possible... if the fumes dont kill you anything from the rock slides to ambushes will.

Re: You know things are bad

same salang pass which is backed up for miles for nato supplies?

don't hundreds of local pakhtuns cross the durand line every day both ways without any checkposts etc? how is this news?

Re: You know things are bad

Aye same Slang pass which is a classic ambush point... no wonder even NATO fear the place of high death.

Re: You know things are bad

Unless all of those supplies are exiting Kabul towards Mazar or Kundoz that makes no sense. You are essentially implying that the pass is so backed up normal people can't use it. That ain't the case because our road missions use the pass on a weekly basis.

Hundreds of local pakhtuns do cross. But who the hell crosses to Pakistan for safety when they elope?

Re: You know things are bad

^ So it must be much improved since the late 90s... I remember it was often closed becuase of the dangerous climatic conditions and also the war between the Northern Alliance and Taliban.

I thought it would be closed for winter months at least if not for many periods across the year. I remember it being very narrow not much more than one truck could pass in width... but perhaps its been made better afterall a decade or more has passed now.
