What do you think are the pros and cons of giving such rights to suspects?
I’m a crime fanatic and I watch British, American, Indian and Pakistani crime shows.
As much as the lack of proper ethics/training amongst our South Asian police irks me, I do love it when the criminals spill out all the truth upon being interrogated because they fear the police. In the more civilized part of the world, the bechara officer interrogates a suspect for hours and gets nothing but “No comment” as a response to every question asked. That is obviously a more legal, ethical way of interrogation but if you don’t have any evidence against the suspect, you’ll have to let him go because he isn’t going to confess. And that irks me too.
I was watching a documentary on the Russian prison system and omg the US/EU prisons seem like heaven in comparison. I don’t agree with providing the convicted with televisions and whatnot in the jail either… why would you wanna make the place comfortable for the criminals, that’s not going to put them off of comitting crime again, is it?
But that is only if you can prove they are in fact guilty.
I was watching an episode of "sar-e-aam" on ARY and they exposed a child molesting teacher... he confessed to everything on camera, apologised, cried, people even slapped him n all on the street, the ARY people called the police and he was taken in custody. Had this happened elsewhere, he would never have confessed to anything and you'd have to find some evidence or let him go despite the testimony of the child because you couldn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he wasn't making it up.
I guess that'd be a fair, lawful trial but I dunno ... the law protects everyone including these monsters.

Yes, what sort of justice system lets people go due to lack of evidence. Screw due process, water-board the bastid and watch him confess.
Pakistani interrogation techniques can make an innocent man confess to mass murder. All I have to do is mess with some police officer, by looking at him or his daughter the wrong way. Try living in Pakistan realizing someone could get you arrested just cause they don't like you, and get you convicted without even going through the hassle of planting evidence.
That's true. I'm all for Pakistan adapting the justice system of the west, I really really hope it does.
The only con I'm speaking of is that the criminals are becoming smarter knowing they have such and such rights and they know exactly how to fool the system.
The average criminal isn't that smart. The average is criminal is high when he's committing a crime and leaves behind loads of forensic evidence. As far as smart people are concerned, they can beat any system. They'd learn to not get caught while operating in Pakistan. They can't interrogate you if they can't catch you.
Fair point. The drug lords are especially cunning and it's unbelieveable to me how hard it is for the police to put them behind bars. They usually have to carry out highly risky and lengthy sting operations to even hope to get some evidence against them. You know exactly what they're up to but you just can't do anything about it and they take full advantage of that.
Still innocent people are put behind bars. What would be the situation if the Western police stations had drawing rooms like ours. The real way to stop crime is provide people with opportunities. Law enforcement can only act as deterrent for people who aren't desperate.
Hmm I dunno. The average criminal in the west doesn't have to face a fraction of the hardships that a desperate criminal back home may be experiencing and still their prisons remain overcrowded.
Even if certain cunning ones are able to fool the system, I guess I can find solace in the fact that no innocent people are being thrown into prisons with the modern justice system, which isn't the case in Pakistan. That's a good way to look at it I suppose.
The hardships are relative. They might have food and electricity. But majority of the criminals come from low income homes, that were supported by a single parent who was working multiple jobs and didn't have time for his kid. They come from neighborhoods that have a rampant gang and drug problem, so they grow up dealing and seeing other people deal. Their schools aren't the happy places your schools were. Hence they never had a chance. With their dad's in prison for peddling and them being in gangs themselves, they were destined for a life of crime.

I fear you speak upon the rack where men enforced do speak anything.
One of my khalas once caught a woman in Karachi stealing from her purse and tackled her and held her until the police arrived. My mamu went to the police station to give my khala support and witnessed the police interrogation.
The following took place while the thief woman was handcuffed within earshot, after the police had come back from her residence and had found more items there that they suspect were stolen. Translation is approximate
Officer 1:
"Sir, she won't admit to it, what can we do? We can't hit her, she's a woman!"
Officer 2:
"Don't you know how to make a woman talk? Tie her shalwaar legs at the bottom, and drop a kitten into her shalwaar."
I don’t think that they would have actually done it, but they were trying to terrify her into confessing. It worked!
What makes the mental picture of the beginning of my story funnier is that both my khala and the woman she tackled and held wore full burqas with niqab. Imagine the sight!
