You all look alike to me- Rush hour 2

what is the deal with tucker? heck imagine if chan was saying this to all the kaloos in rush hour one “you all look alike to me” and calling him a “monkey”

thats just another example of how its okay to be a racist byatch to some groups and not to others.

no see that 'you all look alike to me' sentence is frequently used - yes its rude, but everyone (us, the public) uses it quite a bit as it is.
and it may subtle to some .. but i guess its used purposely in this movie in a satirical way giving off the msg that comments like that that are real rude, and real wrong ..
chris tucker saying it in the script allows the overly said comments we all try to hide all too often are being brought out in the wide open, and thats' a good thing.

either that or chris tucker is totally being a racist moron, which i kinda doubt ..that's just his purposeful material for his acts

So right on Fraudz… incidentally I was sitting in this presentation couple of days ago about merchandising office products from China .. we saw zillions of slide about Chinese Industry … and our Merchandising managers kept on mocking Chinese food and their English .. one of the managers even demonstrated how Chinese sound when they speak English … that made me wonder how would they mock desies on their back … or they would dare to make fun of Blacks? .. the question is.. respecting of culture and race is done out of political correctness or just plain understanding of the differences among people and cultures?…

Hey one more thing
These things are hard to explain
For some it seems strange... to swallow
The frontier of our minds
Is the last place we find
But maybe the first place we should go

Chris Tucker is a decent actor, and its not him just saying it, but it’s the writers of the script writing it and the directors allowing it. Chris tucker is just the one saying it, so I doubt its his own issues.

The fact remains that if writers use such sort of dialogue against certain other groups.. which have more political clout…the scenes would be on the censor room floor.

As my friend Rooster Blues so eloquently pointed out, are we being just politically correct or are we challenging our own assumptions and stereotypes and actually being unprejudiced in real life.

What does it say about the alleged absence of prejudice or low levels of prejudice. To me it says, as long as there is not a backlash you can make fun of anyone, be it the chinese, indians, arabs whoever…just don’t push your luck with certain other groups.

I agree with aphro here. Haven't seen the film but you can't really make movies and restrict them with political correctness otherwise they become meaningless. Take Platoon for example. without the grunt constantly referring to the vietnames as "****ing gooks" it wouldn't have given the right message whatsoever.

It depends on the context of the film. And let's face it, the "you all look alike to me" is pretty common to hear, especially wrt Chines people.

the point was not about do we need political correctness, but how it is aplied selectively.

dare to say something to blacks or gays in a mainstream movie. I could'nt care 2 bits about political correctness, I would rather have a racist b* be a racist B* and atleast I know where the person stands.

black leaders complain all the time that blacks are shown in criminal roles (which btw is statistically correct) and have thus succeeded in convincing producers to show blacks in better roles, thus the number of black doctors u see on ER etc (statistically incorrect portrayal)

so, lets find someone else and start picking on them.

The point is not about political correctness, and it is not about not being able to show "real life" but about selective application of the "standards"

Fraudz,

it is reassuring to see a curryhead like you being able to spot kinks in the sytem. it certainly was unfair of the gay yankee censor board to let Tucker's racial slurs against the chaptas go uncut. it's all those bad@$s kaloos, man. and those ugly habloos too..

I started this post a few months earlier about blacks getting away too much.

I am sorry, I am not black. I am not white. but as an outsider I have to say that black get away with alot of racist sutff that a white guy cant! I mean if the same line a white guys says it is offensive. But when Chris Tucker says is funny.

I remember that the writers oft he first movie make fun of Chinese food. Remember when Jackie Chan is asked what he is eating he is like CAMEL HUMP and then When Chris is asked he says EELS. I mean food other than there SOUL food is all Camel hump and wierd stuff like that?

Khare in good faith its alright. But I still think blacks get away with alot and they still whine alot.

The fact remains that if writers use such sort of dialogue against certain other groups.. which have more political clout…the scenes would be on the censor room floor.

Maybe the Chinese Americans just aren't that bothered about using political clout to get films censored. I mean what's stopping them from doing so? At least looking at the broader picture actors like Chan and Bruce lee managed to project themselves in positive roles. Why make a big deal out of a throwaway comment? And if that's your pont, that blacks shouldn't be so jumpy when they get called baboons, monkeys or whatever, then i agree with you.

Onviously I do carry as much clout as major movie houses, producers and writers and thus have as much responsibility to be equitable in my portrayal of various ethnicities
