You a paki?

Someone asked me this: ‘why is the term ‘paki’ seen as being rasict? After all, is it not just a abbreviation of the term “Pakistani”. Like many who say “Bengali” or “Somali”’.what’s the best I can give him?

Re: You a paki?

Generally speaking, the term paki is offensive because of the history behind it. Back in the 60s it was used with the intent to undermine pakistanis. Its also the same reason why the term nigger is offensive because again, it was used to undermine african americans. Bengali and somali arent offensive because there is no real history of using those words to defame the respective nationalities. Hope i make sense. The terms on their own arent offensive - i mean theyre just names

Re: You a paki?

The abbreviation is Pakistani. NOT Paki.

Clearly, you don't have an idea the word Paki was and is used to put down the Pakistani race. It's clearly a negative word because of the reaction it causes so there you have your answer.

Re: You a paki?

Don't forget 'Paki-bashing'.

Re: You a paki?

Lol, how is it in the Dutch lands? Must be a lot worse then the UK.

Re: You a paki?

Just one minor point - there is no such thing as Pakistani race. The P word is used as a put down of Pakistani people.

Re: You a paki?

Tbh, I personally didn't notice and/or experience much hatred for Pakistanis, here in the Netherlands. But yeahh, they didnt forget Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan :D

Re: You a paki?

I think the Dutch let the Dr slip through their fingers. However, I think he is over accredited with the nuclear development. Munir Khan was the real pioneer behind the whole programme.

Re: You a paki?

my mum grew up in amsterdam

Re: You a paki?

Paki is/was a derogatory term in the UK for people of Pakistani and South Asian descent. However, considering how frequently people of Pakistani descent seem to use the term among themselves for themselves, perhaps they no longer consider it offensive and have reappropriated the term somewhat? I would like to add another minor point that there is no such thing as a "race" per se; it's a social construct.
