York U or Ryerson?

I can’t seem to decide whether to attend York or Ryerson. I doubt that I’d be attending UofT, as it’ll take me another three years to complete an undergrad degree, whereas it’ll take me about 2 years at York and Ryerson.

At York I can get BAS (Bachelor of Administrative Studies) in General Management. http://www.yorku.ca/web/futurestudents/programs/template.asp?id=629

At Ryerson I can get BComm in Management.

I’m still interested in UofT; however, the chances of me attending UofT are slim, as it’ll take me longer.

Pros, cons, and any other advice related to York and Ryerson would be helpful.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

If its between York's Atkinson College degree vs. a degree from Ryerson's SBM... I'd go with Ryerson.

If it were York Schilich, than that would be a different story, and I'd even go as far as favoring it over Toronto's Rotman.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

^Ditto.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

Thanks.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

The extra year at UofT could make an impact on the job market.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

Yorkuuu! you can meet me sis :)

haha, but it doesnt make a difference in undergrad anyway.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

bbbb, I know people who say it wouldn't make a difference for undergrad.

Mad_Scientist, I'm thinking about UofT as well. However, I've only applied to Scarborough campus. I believe it's a little too late to apply for downtown.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

^ again, Scarb. campus v.s. Ryerson's SBM vs. York's Atkinson...
go with a Professional School rather than a general Arts & Sciences Faculty or even a Dept. of Management - so Ryerson it should be in this case as well.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

again, who defines this "Professional school"?

pfft...this is what totally throws people off!

Re: York U or Ryerson?

^ A Professional school is where you have specialist faculty areas of research and teaching… e.g. an area for accounting, marketing etc. with their own area heads etc. as opposed to a general Dept. of Business where different faculty may individually pursue their own research interests.

Secondly, the breadth of program concentrations and the availability of resources for graduate studies is also a differentiating factor between a professional school vs. a dept.

Finally, there are also governing bodies for different types of schools… for Business Schools, it is the AACSB - the Associate for Advanced Colleges & Schools of Business… who have annual reviews and quality control schemes that schools need to adhere to in order to be maintain accreditation. In Ontario, there are currently six accredited schools of business - more info here: http://www.aacsb.edu/General/InstLists.asp?lid=3

Hope that clarifies what I meant by “professional schools”.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

fair enough bro, sorry for discrediting you in such a way. I just had a lot of bad experience with peoples false judgement on uni's.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

^ np - I know what you mean... being in academia, I hear it all the time.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

So if I have to choose between UTSC, Atkinson, and Ryerson, Ryerson would should be the choice?

I thought UTSC would still have an edge. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline for UT downtown, so can't apply. :\

Re: York U or Ryerson?

^ nope... UTSC won't have that much of an edge to justify an extra year.

Rotman yes... UTSC no...

Re: York U or Ryerson?

Too late for Rotman. I don't think it'd be wise to waste another year waiting for Rotman.

I got lazy applying for Rotman thinking that it'd likely be the same as UTSC, which is much closer to where I live.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

Rotman.. I spit on thee. It's a love-hate relationship.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

Atkinson is a Professional Business study school though?

Re: York U or Ryerson?

no... but Schulich is...

Atkinson has an Administrative Studies department that hosts a few business programs.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

hey im in the same boat. I just sent my final official transcripts to york(bas) and ryerson(bcomm). Hopefully, I hear from them soon. I am going to pick ryerson because they just built a new business school 9 storey building on the BAY street. Plus, they just launched MBA. Inshallah, i receive admission offer from them.

Re: York U or Ryerson?

Atkinson provides part-time degree, evening classes only.
