Has anyone made a trip to Yellowstone park? Any tips, places to see around apart from park. Was planning to go to Salt Lake city and drive from there.

Yes, I went there about a month ago.
Right next to the park, towards the south are the Grand Tetons, that are worth the trip. The town next to it, Jackson Hole, is nice for a change when you have spent many days in wilderness.
You are going in peak season so expect long lines and a lot of people. If you want to see the wild, gear up for hikes. The ones around the yellowstone river are most beautiful, the one to the north side near the mammoth springs will probably be less populated.
There will be Bisons and Elk everywhere, so don’t stop when you see your first. Black bear is sometimes near the walk ways but spotting a grizzly is rare. If you are into bird watching, you are in for a treat.
The cabins/hotels inside the park are great! But if you have not made reservations already, I doubt you will get any now. The hotels in West Yellowstone (Montana) are probably the closest.
