Yellow Split Peas

Has anyone ever cooked daal in a desi style using yellow split peas/mattar daal?

I bought it by accudent instead of channa daal :frowning:

Is it ok? Also some quick and easy recipes would be good

Re: Yellow Split Peas

Aren't they the same? Chana daal = yellow split peas.

Re: Yellow Split Peas

you will need a pressure cooker for it werna lambi cooking in the normal pot …

Recipe :
Prepare the basic masala ( fry onions, add ginger garlic , add spices , then add in the tomato paste .. bhoon until oil separates , then add in the chana’s … add two glasses water and put it in the pressure cooker …

When done, check that they are fully cooked and soft to touch, add in fresh corriander … enjoy :e6:

Re: Yellow Split Peas

how long without a pressure cooker CB? maybe 3-4 hours?? NO pressure cooker at uni :(

Re: Yellow Split Peas

It is not chana it is mattar daal as inspiron rightfully said.

Re: Yellow Split Peas

What is Chana daal then?

Re: Yellow Split Peas

Never mind I fond out....Funny I have been cooking yellow split pea thinking of it as Chana daal....taste the same to me :)

Re: Yellow Split Peas

Chana dal is flat and round. Mattar dal is round and round :D

Re: Yellow Split Peas

If mooli and gajar taste the same to you what can I do about it. :snooty:

Re: Yellow Split Peas

yup inspiron a good 3 hours :cb: good luck …

The only thing you can do is see if you an get a soda bi carbonate ( baking soda , not baking powder ) you will get it for 39p from any store …

If you add in a tsp of it while you soak the daal overnight .. and then nextday when you boil the daal first in loads of water .. add another tsp of the soda … that will reduce the cooking time … but will still take you two to three hours …
