yeh gumbad-e-meenaaii! yeh aalam-e-tanhaaii
mujhko to Daraatii hai is dasht kii pinhaaii

gumbad-e-meenaaii = sharaab kii botal
dasht = jangal

bhaTkaa huaa raahii maiN, bhaTkaa huaa raahii tu
manzil hai kahaaN terii, ai laala-e-saHraaii

laala-e-saHraaii = registani phool

Khaali hai kaleemoN se yeh koh o kamar, varna
tu sho'ala-e-siinaaii! maiN sho'la-e-siinaaii

kaleem = baat karnewaalaa [moosa .as. ka laqab]
koh = pahaaR
kamar = plateau
sho'la-e-siinaaii = koh e seena ka sho'ala [moosa a.s. ne jo dekhaa thaa]

tu shaaKh se kiuN phooTaa, maiN shaaKh se kiuN Tootaa
ik jazba-e-paidaaii, ik lazzat-e-yaktaaii

jazba-e-paidaaii = desire to manifest
lazzat-e-yaktaaii = pleasure of uniqueness

Ghauvvaas-e-moHabbat kaa Allah nigehbaaN ho
har qatra-e-daryaa meN daryaa kii hai gahraaii

Ghavvaas = Divers

is mauj ke maatam meN rotii hai bhaNwar kii aaNkh
daryaa se uThii lekin saaHil se na Takraaii

maatam = peeTnaa [beating]
bahNwar kii aaNkh = eye of the whirl

hai garmii-e-aadam se hangaama-e-'aalam garm
suuraj bhii tamaashaaii, taare bhii tamaashaaii

garmii-e-aadam = human activity
hangaama-e-aalam garm = dunyaa kii gahma gahmii

ai baad-e-bayaabaanii! mujhko bhii 'inaayat ho
Khaamoshii o dil_sozii o sarmastii o ra'naaii**

dil-sozii = burning of heart
sarmastii = tranquility
ra'naaii = glamour**

i have no idea what your level of understanding in urdu is but i am here to help you as much as i can. i admire ur love of urdu and ur shauq o zauq :)** i’ve jotted down the meanings of hard urdu words that might help u to some extent, iA

The thing is that I grew up listening to hardcore ghazals, developed a liking for the flow and could get the gist of most of them but had to bug him (dad) for the meanings...then I get married to someone who is an awesome urdu writer/poet but again, I have to bug him for every detail.

I guess I'll learn some day...

u r most welcome ji...oh i see...masha Allah. u had some rich cultural and linguistic bacground and now u r blessed to be married to an excellent poet and writer in urdu...i don't think u bug him, i 'm sure he loves the fact that u value his work and that u love urdu. i explained my dad's poetry to my neice who is 16 and she reallly likes it :)

insha Allah, u'll be good at it once u put ur heart, effort and soul into learning...believe me, its NOT hard :)**

**yes, my dad was a great poet of the calibre of Jigar/AsGhar/Iqbal...Jigar Muradabadi was his friend and AsGhar GonDvii was their mentor.

i've seen ONLY 2 "saaqiinaamas" in ma life. one was written by Iqbal and the other one bu my Dad...if u read both side by side, u won't know the difference. saaqiinaama's are extempore narrations of the poet's observations regarding whats happening around him and always interjecting wisdom in the lines. its amazing how a poet thinks and looks at things with a fresh and unique perspective. the urdu is of class in saaqiinaamas.

a couple of years ago i was studying allama Iqbal on my own when i read this musalsal Ghazal and tried to write a long Ghazal myself that comprised on 23 ash'aars. here are a few ash'aars for u:

ik qatra nahiiN KhuuN kaa, dil ban gayaa saHraa saa
Hasrat hai jahaaN 'onqaa, juuN laala-e-saHraaii

paate hii jhalak unkii dil ban gayaa saudaaii
ik pal kaa nazaara thaa, ik 'umr kii rusvaaii

kab saamne aa kar vo, "Hashmat Ji", miTaayeNge
din raat kii be_taabii, dard-e-Gham-e-tanhaaii**
