I need help especially if you have experience from the yearbook clubs at school.
A group of people and I have decided to ‘introduce’ one to our first year batch at college.
The problem is that we need a lot of help as none of us have ever participated in the making of one during highschool. (This is why we’re limiting it to the first years only.)
Just to let you know, it’s for a medical college in Karachi so not a lot of expectations about the resources.
Here are some points I’ve come up with so far:
–Need to have a teacher supervisor
–Need to contact a publisher
–Appointment of specific jobs (editor, head of photography, Advisor, etc)
One tip that I’ve gotten so far is:
After taking a pic, immediately jot down the name and batch of the person photographed and the pic number to avoid confusion later on.
Okay that’s about all the knowledge I have for publishing yearbooks.
Some tips about financing the whole thing and pleasing the crowd would def. help.
I'm not sure how much of a budget you have. Maybe you should talk to a head and find out how much you have to begin with. (In my high school, we would pay a little fee that would cover our ID cards, yearbooks, etc. Maybe you could arrange something like that.)
If you have plenty to work with, you should go with at least a few coloured pages of photographs. You could add little comments to them for humour.
- Try to cover as many committees/clubs/extra-curricular activities you have in your college. Possibly, have a group picture of all the members and a brief description of what they do. This would be very helpful for the new students, in case anyone wants to join and help out.
- Advertise to students for submitting poems or little articles to be published in the yearbook. These could include little experiences of the 1st year students of the previous year.
- Another interesting thing would be to gather a bunch of photographs of different students and make them into a collage. (They'd have an interesting time finding people in it.)
- Have a few pages for autographs. (I remember that being the BEST part about the yearbook!!)
- You could cover some interesting upcoming events of the year in your college.
- Have a page about entertainment, covering any interesting movies/songs/artists.
Hmm...I think that's all I can think of, for now. I'll have to go and look at my old yearbooks to be able to give you more ideas.
Just make sure to give a light touch to it. It shouldn't be a total formal and serious thing. Add as much humour as you can. (ie. One of the years in high school, our yearbook committee had come up with little humourous nicknames for each member.) Something like this would give a "friendly" impression to the students. Once they get to know you guys, I'm sure they'll enjoy reading the yearbooks in the following years...and actually look forward to getting it!! :)
It's an awsome idea that you're starting it up. I've been involved in my high school in these kinds of things..and had a great time. I'm sure it'll be even more fun in Pakistan!! Good luck!
Actually, I brought two of my best yearbooks along from back home so I have a general idea as to where to start/end.
I was thinking of pooling together some money in the beginning and then balancing it out with the sale of the yearbook towards the end of the first year.
The idea about involving the old first year is sweet. Never thought about it.
Yeah, Paki students (studious type) are fanatics for absolute formality but I think a bit of humour here and there would lighten the publication.
I'll make sure we talk to the principal ahead of time to see our financial status and to see if the party platforms can 'donate' a bit.
Autographs! They sure are the best part! ( I was reading em all yesterday and they bring back sooo many memories!) I'm sure desi dudes/duddettes will need more than a couple of pages.
I think we'll donate the colour pages to the collage and staff members....see how it works out.
I'm just not sure how to work at it tho. I always had this picture in my mind of having large pages with exact measurements as to where to place the pictures/quotes and then handing that big thing over to the publisher to make it a compact type. I've seen some yearbook word done here and there but not in detail.
a highschool yearbook is fairly different from a college/unis. I have participated in yearbook planning for my undergrad uni but not in detail with finances and publisher selection. More from a content/theme/design perspective.
The biggest thing is that you want people to open the year book the day they get it and remember their time at the uni, the past year, what was going on. This is not limited to just the university events and activities but what was going on in the world. A good balance on internal events and developments..new bldgs labs, sports team performance, musucal and theater events, major events in the year that had an impact on the students... pictures of each student, group pictures of organizations.
here is a start. what you can also do is search for info on companies that publish yearbooks. they usually have helpful hints and advise etc.
its a good idea to have an estimated yearbook amount added in the students fees so they dont have to later spend cash and this way the yearbook team knows their budget and can work properly. For the first year I would suggest a fundraiser as well as asking uni for funding.
first things first..hope i am not that late in replying..
x-commi, i would suggest few things here..first of all make a survey form and make photocopies of them..distribute it to students and get the feedback on what they would like to see in the year book..also how much they are willing to spend on it..
-secondly, decide on approximate copies you'll be needing to publish and limit it to a certain number of pages and i would suggest that instead of those big style huge book types..plan for a small size version coz its cheaper in printing in karachi..call some publishers like fazli sons etc and ask for the rates of black and white and few colored pages..
-i am sure that lot of students will have parents that would love to be part of advertising..fix a rate and put up an ad on bulletin boards in college..if not try going to some medical stores and hospitals..i am sure they would love to advertise in your yearbook..plus it will give you folks some great experience as well
i hope it helps :) but again i suggest do the budgeting first and allocation of funds before venturing into it.
Qrius--thanks a lot. That REALLY helped. Never thought about it like that.
The survey is a great idea b/c then the concept is introduced as well as opinions are collected. If I can't get my hands on the survey, I'll make sure we get teh word out as announcements or the bulletin boards.
Yeah, about the number of publications...we have about 400 in our batch so I'm thinking 450 +. Will need to do some research about it tho (staff members count).
Hey I never thougth about the advertising part of it all. We have a diverse background when it comes to students so I'm sure we'll strike luck here and tehre.
Again, thanks a lot buddy. Keep me updated as we proceed towards the actual making if u can.
Fraudia--Yes, we've decided to ask teh political parties to donate their pics that they have taken at their functions thruout hte year. And lucky us, there are a lot of publishing companies (in line) in Saddar, very close to our college.
OB-our college has its own newspaper (jamiat) but as far as yearbook type publications are concerned, i have yet to hear of one. I think it's because of the different party platforms that there arent united or combined publications of the college as a whole.
